'Slowly losing it': Internet trolls Mitt Romney as he defends Katie Britt after SOTU rebuttal backlash
WASHINGTON, DC: Sen Mitt Romney intervened to support fellow Republican Sen Katie Britt, stating that the criticism she received for her State of the Union reply address was unjustified and that it demonstrated the fear that liberals had for her broad popularity.
The cadence of Britt's voice and her choice to use anecdotal evidence of sex trafficking that occurred in Mexico 20 years ago to attack President Biden's border strategy earned her scorn on 'Saturday Night Live' and internet trolling.

Mitt Romney posted on X, "In a good way, the delivery was over-the-top, out of character—Biden’s, of course. Katie Britt’s too. The media overreaction to hers not his tells us who liberals most fear as VP nominee."

The first-term senator Britt has generated considerable talk about her potential selection as the running mate for former President Donald Trump. With his Senate term coming to a close, Romney plans to resign and has made it clear that he will not support Trump in the election scheduled for November 5.
Romney was one of the main Republican opponents of Trump throughout his tenure in the Senate. However, he has also been scathing in his criticism of President Biden.
Romney welcomed Biden's foreign policy remarks shortly after his State of the Union speech, but he said that the incumbent was pushing "the same old liberal playbook" of high taxes and spending. Until Sunday, March 10, when the outcry grew stronger, Romney had been mostly silent about Britt's address.
Despite the current State of our Union, I firmly believe that our best days are still ahead. It’s our turn to stand up and prove ourselves worthy of protecting the American Dream. Together, we can reawaken the heroic spirit of a great nation. pic.twitter.com/VN6neGCTF4

In addition, Britt faced criticism for a narrative she shared about a victim of Mexican drug trafficking.
“President Biden didn’t just create this border crisis. He invited it with 94 executive actions in his first 100 days. When I took office, I took a different approach. I traveled to the Del Rio sector of Texas. That’s where I spoke to a woman who shared her story with me,” She added. The said victim, identified as Karla Jacinto Romero, was exploited between 2004 and 2008, over a decade before Biden became president.
Internet takes a jibe at Mitt Romney for defending Katie Britt
Mitt Romney was mercilessly trolled as he defended Katie Britt after the SOTU rebuttal backlash. A user on X posted, "I usually like Mitt Romney. But a statement like this probably explains why he’s retiring. Slowly losing it," whereas one added, "Well if you weren't already sure, this seals it. Romney supporting Katie Britt for VP automatically disqualifies her as an option."
