LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Stephen Colbert took the opportunity to roast Donald Trump’s attempt at a “fact check” during Kamala Harris’ acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention (DNC).

As Harris was formally accepting the Democratic nomination on Thursday night, August 22, Trump was busy on Truth Social, posting over 50 times during her 38-minute address.

The four-day DNC at Chicago concluded on Thursday with Harris' acceptance speech where she stressed unity and the need to protect democracy. Her speech provoked a torrent of outrage from Trump.

While Trump’s Truth Social barrage was dubbed as a “fact check”, it was eventually the former president's rambling attacks against his political rival.

Stephen Colbert mocks Donald Trump’s nitpicking over Tim Walz’s coaching title

Among his numerous comments, Donald Trump criticized Tim Walz, claiming that Kamala Harris was misrepresenting him as a high school coach when he was actually only an assistant coach.

On 'The Late Show, Stephen Colbert couldn’t resist poking fun at Trump’s nitpicking on 'The Late Show', broadcast live from Chicago that evening. Emulating Trump’s style, Colbert read Trump’s post aloud, “Walz was an ASSISTANT coach, not a COACH.”

Colbert then humorously remarked, “Oh my god…of course, he was an assistant coach. You know what that means? Walz was only qualified to become some sort of vice president, if you think about it, good catch… good catch,” eliciting laughter from the audience.

In his monologue, Colbert also jested about Walz and the DNC’s events. He quipped, “To honor the suffrage movement, many delegates and speakers wore all white – while Tim Walz honored suffrages by being all white.”

Colbert further entertained the live audience with a comparison of the DNC and RNC’s television ratings.

"One reason could be the speakers... Night two of the DNC featured Michelle and Barack Obama, while the RNC’s second night closed with Lara Trump and Marco Rubio,” he said. “That’s like saying, sorry we don’t have coke, is diarrhea okay?”

According to Nielsen ratings, the DNC drew over 20 million viewers for its third night, continuing a trend of high viewership. In contrast, the RNC’s third night saw three million fewer viewers, with 18 million tuning in when JD Vance delivered a notable speech as the Republican vice presidential nominee.

Stephen Colbert also referenced a viral moment from Harris’ speech, the line, “you think you just fell out of a coconut tree?” which has become a meme favorite among Gen Z.

Colbert remarked, “I don’t know about y’all but after a week of live shows, watching all this energy and joy and purpose tonight, I feel like I just fell out of a coconut tree.”

He concluded on a more reflective note, stating, “And here’s the context… moments ago, the Democrats formally nominated the first woman of color to ever have a major party political ticket: Kamala Harris. There you go, write that down in your history books.”

The vice president became the first Black woman to headline a major party’s nomination for the presidency.
