WASHINGTON, DC: The FBI secretly recorded James Biden, the brother of President Joe Biden, during an investigation into a Mississippi trial attorney who paid out $100,000 to his consulting firm in the late 1990s.

According to a report published on Sunday, December 17, 2023, by the Washington Post, Richard Scruggs, the trial attorney, hired James and Sara Biden’s Washington, DC consulting firm to garner support for tobacco legislation being considered by Congress in 1998.

Although neither James nor President Biden were implicated in any significant criminal activity, the disclosure of this information coincides with an investigation into allegations of influence-peddling by the president’s family members.

What did Richard Scruggs say to the outlet?

Scruggs, who was later sentenced to prison over a separate bribery scheme, admitted to the outlet that he would not have hired James Biden's firm if he had not been the senator's brother.

“I probably wouldn’t have hired him if he wasn’t the senator’s brother,” Scruggs said.

Scruggs had been closing in on a deal to push tobacco companies to pay billions of dollars in a lawsuit alleging that they withheld information about the addictive nature of their products.

In order to secure the settlement, Scruggs required Congress to waive antitrust provisions.

Initially, then Senator Joe Biden (D-Del) was skeptical of the deal, but later became one of its major supporters. Despite his efforts, the bill failed to clear Congress due to an intense campaign by the tobacco industry that swayed Republicans.

Scruggs made multiple $10,000 payments to Lion Hall, James and Sara Biden’s consulting firm, over roughly a year, according to the Washington Post.

Although Scruggs was unsure if James convinced his brother to back the bill, but he expressed hope that he did.

A lawyer for James Biden strongly denied that his work involved speaking with or providing access to his brother, then-Senator Joe Biden.

Scruggs had no intention of being part of the venture but became acquainted with Biden's brother through Steve Patterson, an aide to former Sen John Stennis (D-Miss).

There have been calls for an impeachment probe, but the White House has argued that there is insufficient evidence to warrant such a probe, although several Republicans have publicly expressed doubts about the inquiry.

Internet mocks the GOP for baseless impeachment inquiry against Biden

People on X asked the right-wing trolls on the platform if they had anything against Joe Biden that warrants an impeachment inquiry.

One X user said, “The most important line: "Neither James, 74, nor his brother President Joe Biden, 81, were implicated in any major criminal wrongdoing in the case."”

Another user remarked, “Waiting for charges (still)”

Another user stated, “Yawwwwn ,there absolutely no equivalent to the corruption and sheer amount of trump officials who have gone to jail. Look at Obama's presidency, not one scandal, not one official in jail or under investigation. Republicans are under the spell of a crime family & it's not the Bidens”.

One user wrote, “Decency is back in the White House...”

Another X user quipped, “So do you have anything from the 21st century? Lmao”.

Finally, this user tweeted, “Still the wrong Biden”.
