WASHINGTON, DC: It seems like the frostiness between Jill Biden and Kamala Harris might finally be thawing.

For months, whispers about a feud between the First Lady and the Vice President have been making the rounds, but there was finally a little warmth in the air during Joe Biden's farewell address to the nation on January 15. Could this be the start of a truce?

Jill's unexpected gesture during Joe Biden's farewell speech

The farewell speech itself was emotional, with Joe Biden reflecting on his time as commander-in-chief.

"It's been the highest honor of my life to lead you as commander in chief, and of course, [thank you] to Kamala and her incredible partner," he said, giving a public shoutout to the Vice President and her husband Doug Emhoff. "A historic vice president. She and Doug have become like family, and to me, family is everything."

Meanwhile, Jill and Harris were seated next to each other in the Oval Office as they listened. What happened next was enough to raise eyebrows. During Biden’s speech, a photo was snapped capturing what could only be described as a well-meaning exchange.

In the image, Doug’s hand rests on Kamala’s lap, while Jill’s hand reaches out to rest on top of theirs. Kamala turns toward Jill with a gracious grin, clearly taken by the gesture. It might not have been much, but it felt like a rare moment of camaraderie compared to their recent interactions.

A history of awkward encounters between Jill Biden and Kamala Harris

The sudden warmth came as a shock, especially considering how frosty things had been between Jill Biden and Kamala Harris just a week earlier at Jimmy Carter’s funeral. Footage from the service showed the Bidens arriving to sit in a pew alongside Harris and Doug Emhoff, with Jill seated directly next to Kamala.

But instead of any friendly chatter or even a polite smile, there was nothing. The two women sat in stony silence, and Jill even shifted in her seat to put a little more distance between them. CNN’s Jake Tapper summed it up perfectly: "You didn’t see a typically warm greeting between the first couple and the second couple."

And that’s just one example of their many tense encounters. The strained relations between Jill and Kamala were only exacerbated by a Wall Street Journal report on December 31, claiming there was a lot of "friction" between the Vice President and the Bidens after the presidential election. A source went so far as to describe their relations as "frosty."

Not helping matters was Joe’s bold comment in an interview with USA Today on January 8, where he said he believed he could have defeated Donald Trump in the election. "It's presumptuous to say that, but I think yes," he remarked.

Social media responds to 'frosty' episodes

The tension was on full display during their first public outing after the election. At the Kennedy Center Honors in December, the Bidens’ chilly behavior towards Kamala Harris didn't go unnoticed.

Footage from the event — shared widely on X (formerly Twitter) — showed the Bidens arriving and soaking up applause from the crowd. Harris stood nearby, clapping along, but Joe Biden and Jill didn’t so much as glance in her direction.

The snub was impossible to ignore, and social media users didn’t hold back.

“Body language never lies,” one commenter quipped.

Another added, “You could cut that tension with a knife.”

Someone else wrote: “They hate her! LOL!”

Just a month before that, Jill had pulled the same move during a Veterans Day ceremony at Arlington Cemetery. Harris arrived after Jill and took her time to greet others nearby, but Jill stared straight ahead and avoided any interaction with the Vice President.

Social media, of course, had a field day then as well. “Jill does her best Jackie O impression and ignores Kamala and Doug,” one user wrote. Another chimed in saying, “Very frosty! I could feel the chill from my phone."
