Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder detained at anti-Netanyahu protest outside NYC UN

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Susan Sarandon and 'Hacks' star Hannah Einbinder were among several people detained by police in New York on Thursday, September 24, during a Jewish Voice for Peace protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The demonstration took place as Netanyahu prepared to address the United Nations General Assembly.

NYPD detains Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder at protest

Agence France-Presse footage showed NYPD officers handcuffing Sarandon as they moved in to break up the demonstration.

The New York Post reported that Einbinder was also marched away from the protest, where demonstrators carried banners reading “Stop Arming Israel” and “End the G*nocide.”

An NYPD spokesperson said officers responded to an “unscheduled demonstration” after protesters were reportedly blocking an intersection. Members of the NYPD Community Affairs Bureau warned participants to leave, but several remained.

“They continued to block the intersection. Multiple individuals who didn’t comply were taken into custody,” the spokesperson said. Police did not provide the number of people taken into custody.

Democratic congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier and New York City Council member Chi Osse were also among those arrested.

Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder detained during Netanyahu’s UN visit

The arrests took place as attention focused on Benjamin Netanyahu’s appearance at the UN General Assembly.

Inside the assembly, dozens of envoys from around the world walked out as the Israeli prime minister began his speech.

Netanyahu used his address to criticize enemies and allies whom he said had crossed Israel in recent months, including Britain and France, which have recently moved to recognize the state of Palestine.

“They accuse Israel, tiny Israel, of colonialism, some colonialism. And who’s accusing us? Among them are people in Britain and in France. For God’s sakes, they invented the term,” Netanyahu told the assembly.

The protest outside the UN and the walkout inside the General Assembly unfolded as separate moments of opposition to Netanyahu’s appearance, while his speech focused on Israel’s international critics.

Susan Sarandon says political views impacted her career

Susan Sarandon’s detention comes after years of public comments about Israel’s war in Gaza.

The Oscar-winning actor, whose films include 'Thelma & Louise,' 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show,' 'Dead Man Walking' and 'The Witches of Eastwick,' has previously participated in protests over the conflict.

At the Venice Film Festival earlier this month, Sarandon said she believed her outspoken views had affected her career.

“I’ve still had movies taken away recently because there are agencies that are telling people not to hire me still. But that’s the power structure,” she said.

Sarandon said she had noticed a change in the public’s understanding of the situation but claimed that strong views remained within the entertainment industry.

“I think there has been a change in terms of the understanding of the situation and the general public, but there are still very strongly held positions within my industry that are held by Zionists and who have not relaxed their feelings towards me,” she said.

“But I found my family, I found my people, and I’m OK,” she added.

Hannah Einbinder speaks out on Palestine and Hollywood silence

Einbinder has also previously spoken about the personal and professional consequences of publicly addressing Palestine.

The 'Hacks' actor discussed the issue at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year while referring to the backlash faced by actors including Sarandon and Melissa Barrera.

“I think what they know is what I know, which is that the cost of not speaking is higher,” Einbinder said. She said remaining silent could carry a greater cost than losing her Hollywood career.

“There is a greater toll in not speaking and you’ve just got to have your priorities straight. I am under no impression that my small career could ever measure up in comparison to even one human life. It’s an obligation and I will always do it.”

Her comments came months before she was detained at New York demonstration.

The protest brought together actors, activists and political figures as Netanyahu addressed the UN, with Sarandon and Einbinder among those taken into custody after police said demonstrators continued blocking an intersection despite warnings to leave.
