Taylor Swift shares rare insight into her coping mechanism when life feels ‘unmanageably big’

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE: Taylor Swift recently revealed how she copes when life becomes “unmanageably big,” while reflecting on fame, creativity and the enduring passion for songwriting that has shaped her career.

Swift opened up about her artistry during a retrospective, career-spanning conversation for ‘The Icon Sessions,’ presented by the Recording Academy’s Songwriters & Composers Wing, where she reflected on learning not to let public perception hinder her creativity.

Swift explained that she has developed several “processes and coping mechanisms” over the years to deal with the scale of her career. One of them involves reminding herself that she chose this life and has continued choosing it despite how overwhelming it can become.

“I go through several processes and coping mechanisms that I’ve gone through over the years,” she said while adding, “And one of them is saying, ‘You chose this. You chose this every day. You could have opted out of this any day before it got unmanageably big.’ And I decided not to because I love it that much.”

For Swift, “that’s just where it begins and where it ends. Everything that comes with this ultimately is worth it as long as I get to still make music."

She described music as being about “emotional truths” that will either resonate with people or not. The singer also reflected on how she found success by not listening to people who, while she was growing up, told her she did not have a “valid perspective” to appeal to a “certain genre.”

Swift said, “I realized that I’m making music because I’m playing for the fans, I’m putting this out for people who care about it and who look to music as a way to cope with their life in the way that I did.”

She continued that making music she loves is not a path to universal validation, “I think that if you can actually go through all those checkpoints and realize that putting out music you’ve made that you love so much is not the path to universal validation, if you’re still doing it, then you love it for the right reasons."

Taylor Swift reflects on Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame honor

Swift’s career reached new heights in June when she was inducted into the 2026 Songwriters Hall of Fame. Additionally, on Tuesday, August 11, she was also selected as one of the 2026 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees, announced by Mark Ford, executive director of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Foundation, at Belmont University’s Johnson Theater.

She also became the youngest-ever inductee to join the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Class in the 20-Year Contemporary Songwriter/Artist category. Swift was nominated alongside Lyle Lovett, who is being inducted in 30-Year Veteran Artist category, Bruce Channel, inducted in the 30-Year Veteran Songwriter category and many others.

“From the time I started writing songs as a child, I fixated on Nashville as the perfect place to be,” Swift said in a statement, adding, “I wanted to learn with and from the best and get to immerse myself in a community of storytellers, and thankfully Nashville turned out to be exactly what I’d dreamed of. A town that validated and prioritized hard work, determination and imagination.”

Speaking about being honored in Nashville, Swift added, “Where the writers show up to work every day even when the mysterious muses and the magic don’t. To be honored by this city I love so much is a beautiful thing, and I’m very grateful.”

Since 1970, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame has inducted 254 songwriters.

Meanwhile, during her 20-minute induction speech at the Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony in June, Swift reflected on how songwriting was naturally a form of self-reflection for her.

“No one taught me how to do it,” she said, adding, “I had to be taught how to entertain the crowd and learn choreography, and be less annoying, and navigate the industry, and fiercely protect my own sanity. I had to learn all of that over time through difficult lessons, and massive amounts of trial and error, and chaos, and calamity.”
