DULLES, VIRGINIA: A group of House Republicans led by Guy Reschenthaler, chief deputy whip for the House Republicans is aiming to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after Donald Trump.

This move, through a new proposal to rename the airport in Virginia as The Donald J Trump International Airport, has sparked both support and controversy.

Inside the bill introduced to rename Dulles Airport after Donald Trump

The bill, introduced on Friday, March 29, has garnered support from six Republican cosponsors, including Andy Ogles, Barry Moore, Chuck Fleischmann, Michael Waltz, Paul Gosar, and Troy Nehls, according to Newsweek.

The new proposal stated that if the bill is passed, "the Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia shall after the date of the enactment of this Act be known and designated as the 'Donald J Trump International Airport.'"

"Any reference in any law, regulation, map, document, paper, or other record of the United States to the airport referred to in subsection (a) shall be considered to be a reference to the Donald J Trump International Airport," the proposal continued.

However, the bill faces a hurdle from the part of the Democrat-controlled Senate, where it is unlikely to pass even if the bill is approved by the House of Representatives.

US Airports renamed after famous figures

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, in terms of passenger traffic in 2023, Washington Dulles International Airport was ranked 33rd out of 764 US airports.

Naming airports after famous figures which include former presidents is not uncommon in the US. A Virginia airport was named Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington after 40th president Ronald Reagan in 1998.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas, Gerald R Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and John F Kennedy International Airport in New York are among other airports named after previous presidents.

Internet divided over a bill introduced to rename Dulles Airport after Donald Trump

After House Republicans introduced the new proposal to rename Dulles Airport after Trump, netizens weighed in on the move.

"Terrible idea, just something else with his name that will go bankrupt," a user wrote on X (formerly Twitter) and another user wrote, "So, basically, they are wasting taxpayer time and money for something that will never be approved in crafting this legislation to stroke Trump's ego."

"It’s only fair. Previous Presidents have their names all over the country!" a netizen opined while one user wrote, "The meltdown would be hilarious to watch!"

"Why should anything be named after him?" a user tweeted and another user wrote, "The airport would immediately go bankrupt, just like its namesake."
