'They fight to burp him': Usha Vance's first interview after baby number 4 gets candid

WASHINGTON, DC: Usha Vance has spoken publicly for the first time since welcoming her fourth child with Vice President JD Vance, describing the family's early weeks with their newborn as “really lovely so far.”

In an interview with Fox News Digital at the vice president's residence on Tuesday, August 4, the second lady discussed her older children's excitement, adjusting to life with four children and her decision to expand the family.

The arrival of a new baby has apparently turned the Vance household into a small competition over who gets to help.

Usha said her older children have been eager to take part in caring for their baby brother, with everyone looking for a chance to hold him, entertain him or lend a hand during everyday tasks.

“They're always fighting over holding him,” she said.

That enthusiasm extends to the less glamorous parts of newborn life, too. Usha said her older children want to be involved during diaper and clothing changes and are constantly looking for something they can do for the baby.

“They're willing to burp him, they want to grab things for him, they want to entertain him,” she said.

The family has also been making an effort to ensure that the older children continue to receive individual attention.

Usha said she and the vice president have been taking their children out separately, with the family making a point of getting outside the residence every day.

She recalled a recent outing with one of her middle children that included a trip to a bookstore, lunch and a quick stop at a shop.

Those individual outings, she explained, help reassure the older children that having a newborn has not changed the amount of time they get with their parents.

Usha Vance says 'hiccups' are normal

So far, the second lady has said that the adjustment has gone better than she expected, although she knows life with four children will inevitably bring difficult moments.

“Now, I'm sure there are going to be hiccups here and there!” she said. “But for right now, they seem to be really thriving.”

The older children also seem to have a rather uncomplicated view of the family's expansion.

Rather than seeing the baby as a disruption, they appear to regard him as another member of their team.

“My older kids see this as only good for themselves,” Usha said.

“There’s only one more kid to add to their pack.” For the parents, however, there is one obvious consequence.

“The parents are now outnumbered two to one!” Usha joked.

The Vance family's newest chapter began on July 19, when Usha gave birth to Alec Neel Vance.

JD and Usha announced the baby's arrival in an Instagram post on July 20, telling followers that their baby boy had been born that morning and that both Usha and the newborn were “happy and healthy.”
