WASHINGTON, DC: Second Lady Usha Vance has clarified that a conversation with Erika Kirk following the death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was not the deciding factor behind her decision to have a fourth child with Vice President JD Vance.

Speaking during the June 14 episode of CBS Sunday Morning, the second lady said Erika Kirk's remarks influenced an ongoing discussion between her and her husband, but did not directly change her mind about expanding their family. Her comments add context to claims made in an excerpt from JD Vance's upcoming memoir, which suggested that a conversation between

Usha and Erika played a key role in the couple's decision.

Usha Vance clarifies earlier claims

During the interview, Usha Vance addressed the impact of a conversation she had with Erika Kirk after Charlie Kirk's September 2025 death.

"I think it really heightened JD's sense that he'd been talking about this for a while, this sense that there was this possibility of having another kid whom he could love as much as the three that we had,” Usha said.

She added, “It really did crystallize for you, that sense that if you could have that other child, then you would have nothing to regret. And if we couldn't have that other child, then we were very happy with the children that we had.”

Usha also described Erika's comments as "very powerful" and "certainly very moving to both of us."

However, she stressed that the conversation was not what ultimately convinced her to have another child.

“I think I had already started to open my mind to the possibility,” she told CBS correspondent Robert Costa. “I wouldn't say that this was, for me in any way, the decisive factor. But it came in the middle of a conversation that we were already having.”

What JD Vance wrote

The clarification comes days after excerpts from JD Vance's forthcoming book, 'Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith', were published by The Wall Street Journal.

In the book, Vance recalled how Erika Kirk told Usha she regretted "having only two kids with Charlie" while grieving her husband's death.

“As my wife held Charlie Kirk's widow on the first day of her terrible sorrow, Erika [Kirk] told Usha between sobs that she regretted having only two kids with Charlie,” Vance wrote.

He added, “For years, I'd asked Usha to have another baby, and for years, she told me she was done, especially now that public service had elevated us into the national spotlight. But something changed for Usha, and not long after we buried my friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy.”

The Vances, who share three children, Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel, are expecting their fourth child, a son, in July.

During the CBS interview, both parents said their growing family reflects their optimism about the future despite uncertainty in the world.

“Well, my view is that the world is always a chaotic place. There are always dangers in the world. There are always uncertainties, but having children has given me a sense of purpose, and it brings infinite joy and hope for the future,” Usha said.

JD Vance echoed those sentiments, describing having a child as “fundamentally” an act of hope and saying he and his wife remain grateful for the opportunity to welcome another baby into their family.
