WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump launched an attack on the Republican House members who decided to leave their seats this year, decreasing an already slim GOP majority, according to The Hill.

The former president took to Truth Social on Sunday, March 31, to write, "Never forget our cowards and weaklings! Such a disgrace," and attached a Washington Examiner article about Mike Gallagher's unchanged decision regarding his early retirement.

Donald Trump isn't happy about the dwindling GOP House majority

Trump's targets seemed to have been former Representative Ken Buck and Gallagher since they decided to retire early from Congress, leaving their seats vacant.

While Buck's seat will be up for grabs in June this year as his resignation became effective on March 22, Gallagher's position will remain vacant until January 2025 after he steps down from Congress in mid-April.

With Gallagher's resignation, the openings, together with other House vacancies, will bring the Republican majority down to a single seat, making the already challenging process of clearing party-line votes much more difficult.

Given the circumstances, there have even been speculations that Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries could be named Speaker as some GOP members continue to revolt against current Speaker Mike Johnson.

Trump's attack on Gallagher is echoed by several Republicans since he seemed to arrange his departure from Congress to perfectly align with Wisconsin law in order to avoid a special election.

As a result, rather than being replaced in a few months, his seat will remain vacant until January next year.

Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene even demanded that Gallagher be expelled from the House as a punishment, although her move has not received support and would have little practical impact.

The seat left vacant by Kevin McCarthy's seat is scheduled to be filled at the end of April, so the GOP will have to deal with the one-seat margin for three more weeks.

Gallagher attributed his resignation to the GOP's disarray. In a February interview, conducted after his announcement that he would not seek reelection, the Wisconsin Rep stated, "Since I ran, I always said that Congress shouldn’t be a career."

He added, "I think that the fact that we have so many lifers and careerists in this institution is why it’s so dysfunctional, and that the framers, when they created the Constitution and this country, had in mind that you would embark on a season of service and then return to private life."

Internet reacts to Donald Trump taking jibes at resigning GOP Reps

One wrote, "They're smart. They're not going down with Trump & getting stuck in the minority again next January," and another added, "Americans Get it right this time."

A person expressed, "How funny, they are leaving because they are tired of being in a legislative body that is 100% controlled by Donald Trump."

"Never forget a coward and a weakling? I’m pretty sure no one will forget you, Donny," chided someone else.
