Tim Walz doubles down on remarks his children were conceived through IVF despite wife debunking claim
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris' running mate Tim Walz doubled down on Wednesday, August 21, during the Democratic National Convention (DNC) speech about his family's experience of receiving fertility treatment through in vitro fertilization (IVF) despite his wife debunking the claim.
During his first public appearance as Kamala Harris' VP pick, Walz revealed that he and his wife Gwen underwent infertility treatments for years before deciding to start a family, according to BBC.

Walz doubles down that his children were conceived through IVF
Walz said during the DNC speech, "We've got a golden rule - Mind your own damn business. And that includes IVF infertility treatments. And this is personal for Gwen and I."
He went on to say, "If you've never experienced the hell that is infertility, I guarantee you, you know somebody who has, and I can remember praying each night for a phone call, the pit in your stomach when the phone had ring, and the absolute agony when we heard the treatments hadn't worked."
He added, "It took Gwen and I years, but we had access to fertility treatments and when our daughter was born, we named her Hope. Hope, Gus and Gwen, you are my entire world and I love you."
He further stated, "I'm letting you in on how we started a family because this is a big part about what this election is about. Freedom. When Republicans use the word freedom, they mean that the government should be free to invade your doctor's office."
Walz was met with cheers during his acceptance speech and thanked those who were gathered for 'bringing the joy' to the 2024 election.
Gwen Walz debunks IVF claims
Tim Walz's wife Gwen has clarified that they did not go through IVF despite the running mate repeatedly alluding to the fertility treatments on the campaign trail.
Gwen informed in an interview with Glamour that they went through intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatments to conceive their daughter, Hope, according to BBC.
IUI is the process of placing sperm directly into a woman's uterus and is known more commonly as artificial insemination. It is at times tried as an alternative before the IVF process for being less expensive, invasive, and controversial.
She said, "Our fertility journey was an incredibly personal and difficult experience. Like so many who have experienced these challenges, we kept it largely to ourselves at the time."
She mentioned that their family decided to talk about the experience after seeing the attacks on fertility and reproductive rights, particularly in Alabama.
