WASHINGTON, DC: Gwen Walz, the wife of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, sparked controversy after assigning what many perceived as homework to voters in a recent TikTok video.

The clip, shared on Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign account, prompted social media users to question why she was addressing voters as if they were her schoolchildren.

In the video, Gwen Walz, who has a background as a longtime schoolteacher, stated, “I’m here with an assignment for you today. It’s due on November 5th.”

She donned her “teacher glasses” and emphasized the seriousness of the task, saying, “This is really serious, like a final and there’s no late work.” Her directive was clear: she asked viewers to take themselves and three friends to the ballot box to vote, reiterating, “You have to vote. I’m gonna repeat that again. You and three of your friends have to make your voices heard by voting.”

Gwen Walz's 'assignment' to voters met with mockery and criticism

The reception on social media was largely negative, with many users comparing her approach to that of an overbearing teacher.

One user on X wrote, “Wow... they really think Americans are stupid. Just blows my mind how Democrats think so little of the American people.”

Another chimed in, "Yes they do. I still don’t understand why they think talking to people like they’re 5 is a good strategy. Even more mind-blowing is how people suck it right up without even thinking. "

One user added, "Damn!! She’s even more cringe than Jill Biden hahaha."

Another user replied, "Sorry, but they have every right to expect that out of the people who vote for them. Whether it's a majority or not is the only question."

One user said, "Evidently a lot are stupid."

A user added, "They absolutely believe that nobody can be as smart as they are. Especially voters. They rely on that belief."

“Well the average Democrat voter matches that intellect level. Maybe it’ll work, doubt it though. They’re getting desperate,” someone else stated.

Others simply expressed their frustration, with one commenter stating, “She is painful to listen to. Can't handle that for 4 years.”

One user added, "Having flashbacks to the worst teachers I ever encountered"

This isn’t the first time Gwen has faced scrutiny for her public speaking style. In September, she received backlash for an animated speech against former president Donald Trump at a campaign event in Superior, Wisconsin.

Gwen Walz's animated speech against Donald Trump draws criticism

During that speech, Gwen Walz hollered, “Bye bye. Bye bye Donald Trump!” while leaning into the microphone, adding, “We are turning the page! 52 days and we are turning the page! 52 days and it’s bye bye Donald Trump!”

This energetic delivery did not sit well with critics, including the Trump campaign, which shared a clip with the caption, “CONFIRMED: Gwen Walz is just as cringe as Tampon Tim,” referring to her husband’s controversial support for a law mandating menstrual supplies in boys’ restrooms in Minnesota.

The video and her speech drew further derision from Trump supporters, who described it as “cringe” and a sign that Walz clearly had “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” Some even described her as “worse than Hillary Clinton” or “Hillary 2.0.”

Despite the backlash, Tim Walz expressed pride in his wife’s efforts, asking the crowd, “When Gwen Walz speaks, people always say, ‘Why isn’t she running?’ She’s an English teacher; words matter.”
