Fact Check: Did Walmart cancel Taylor Swift’s $150M clothing line because she endorsed Kamala Harris?
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: A rumor is doing the rounds on social media claiming Walmart had canceled a $150 million children's clothing line featuring pop sensation Taylor Swift, allegedly for political reasons.
It's important to note that the rumor gained traction online after Swift officially endorsed United States Presidential canditate Kamala Harris for the upcoming US election.
The post went viral, drawing mixed reactions from social media users. This follows Taylor Swift receiving widespread praise online for her generous act of feeding over 900 people during her UK Eras Tour in June.
Claim: Walmart cancels Taylor Swift's $150M clothing line citing singer's political affiliations
On October 2, 2024, a Facebook page named America - Love It or Leave It shared a claim in a now-deleted post, stating that Walmart had canceled its collaboration with Swift due to her political associations. Although the viral claim was later removed, it had garnered reactions from over 2,000 users before being deleted.
The post read, "Walmart Cancels $150 Million Taylor Swift Kids Clothing Line: 'We Paid for a Star, Not a Political Sideshow.'"
Some users accepted this claim as true, with one commenter saying, "Oh, well! That's life! Another reason why we all vote in private. Not everyone is for your candidate."
Viral claim about Taylor Swift and Walmart debunked
The viral claim about Taylor Swift and Walmart has been debunked. As per Snopes, the Facebook page America - Love It or Leave It itself indicated in its bio that all the information provided is fictional.
Therefore, the assertion that Walmart canceled a $150 million clothing line collaboration with Swift is false. Additionally, the introduction on the Facebook page where the viral claim was posted stated it is " a subsidiary of the America's Last Line of Defense network of trollery". "Nothing on this page is real."
It's also worth noting that the URL for America's Last Line of Defense indicates that it is a satire site (ALLOD Satire). Although the page is currently unavailable, it clearly stated in its 'About Us' section that no information shared on the page is factual.
"The flagship of the ALLOD network of trollery. Nothing on this page is real," the statement read. Additionally, the page featured a link to the Dunning Kruger Times website, which identifies itself as part of the America's Last Line of Defense network. The 'About Us' section of this site describes itself as a "network of parody".
"Dunning-Kruger-Times.com is a subsidiary of the America's Last Line of Defense network of parody, satire, and tomfoolery," the page states.
Importantly, the claim regarding Walmart and Taylor Swift is a rumor, as neither party has ever announced or discussed any collaboration on a clothing line.
Lastly, no reputable news source reported on the allegation. In contrast, another US retailer, Target, has launched a children's clothing line inspired by Taylor Swift's tour outfits, available both online and in stores.
