WASHINGTON, US: President Donald Trump hailed Ken Paxton after his Senate primary victory in Texas, describing it as a “tremendous win” and promising to actively campaign for him in the general election.

In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, May 27, Trump praised outgoing Senator John Cornyn for running a “strong and powerful race” and applauded his long political career. Trump said Cornyn would remain a friend as Republicans shift their focus toward the general election battle.

The president also predicted that Paxton would become a “fantastic, common sense Senator” respected across the political spectrum. Trump added that he planned to hold campaign rallies for Paxton, saying the upcoming contest would be “FUN.”

Trump attacks Democratic nominee James Talarico

Trump also targeted Democratic nominee James Talarico, calling him “the worst Texas candidate” he had seen and accusing him of being weak on crime and border security.

The remarks signaled an aggressive Republican strategy ahead of the high-profile Senate race, with immigration and law-and-order themes expected to dominate campaign messaging in Texas.

James Talarico frames race around corruption

Talarico responded by portraying the election as a referendum on Paxton’s ethics and political record. In a video posted on X after polls closed, the Democratic candidate accused Paxton of corruption and said the race would be “the people versus Ken Paxton.”

Talarico pointed to Paxton’s past impeachment by Texas House Republicans and alleged that the attorney general had used public office to benefit himself and political donors. Paxton was later acquitted by the Texas Senate.

The Democrat also linked his campaign to broader economic frustrations, promising voters action on wages, taxes, and rising living costs if elected.

Outreach to John Cornyn's supporters

In a separate statement, Talarico thanked Cornyn for his years of service representing Texas and appealed directly to the senator’s supporters.

“We don’t agree on everything, but we both still believe in public service,” Talarico wrote, adding that Cornyn voters would have “a place” in his campaign.

The Texas Senate race is now expected to become one of the most closely watched contests of the election cycle, with Republicans seeking to maintain control of the seat while Democrats attempt to capitalize on divisions within the state GOP.
