Trump blasted for not standing up to meet mother of slain Maryland woman Rachel Morin: 'Lacks dignity'

WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump has come under fire for failing to stand up to comfort Patty Morin, the mother of a Maryland woman killed by a fugitive from El Salvador. 

The White House recently invited Patty Morin to meet the 78-year-old Commander-in-Chief, who greeted her at the Oval Office. As the video of the meeting came out, social media users pointed out the lack of consideration from Trump’s part, as he did not stand up to hug the grieving mother. 

Morin’s daughter, Rachel Morin, was murdered on a popular hiking trail in August 2023 by an illegal immigrant named Victor Antonio Martinez-Hernandez, who was convicted of murder earlier this week, the Irish Star reported.

As the Donald Trump administration is drawing backlash for mistakenly deporting a Maryland man to El Salvador’s mega-prison, the government is putting forward Morin’s case to justify its acts of mass deportation.

In the clip from his meeting with Morin, the devastated mother can be seen leaning toward the Commander-in-Chief to hug him while he is still sitting in his chair. 

After patting her back multiple times, the president turned toward the camera to say, "She's a beautiful woman, she's been through hell." 

As Morin kept standing beside Trump, the POTUS, seated on his chair, told her, "Your daughter is looking down proud of you, you know that."

"I know," said Morin, as Trump added, "Just keep it going.”

Following her meeting with Trump, Morin also met with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt during the Wednesday briefing. During the press briefing, the devastated mother shared the ordeal that her daughter went through before her death.

Donald Trump's behavior with Patty Morin in the Oval Office failed to impress the social media users, as they called the president "lazy" and "disrespectful" for not standing up to comfort the grieving mother. 

One of the social media users commented on X, "He couldn’t even stand up and give her a hug…"

"You pat somebody on the back during a hug when you really don’t wanna hug them. That body language tells you everything. Donald Trump has no empathy for these people. He’s just using them for political purposes. But my heart goes out to these families, of course," shared someone else. 

One person sarcastically noted, "He can’t even stand up. So comforting."

Another penned, "A real gentleman would get up. What he did is a disrespect to this woman 🤦🏼‍♂️."

"Such a caring guy that he couldn’t even get out of the chair," criticized someone else. 

Another remarked, "The fakest most non compassionate hug I have ever seen. And why didn't he at least stand up instead of practically forcing her to come to him ..Cold and fake."

"Proper etiquette would have had Trump standing up to show some morsel of respect to the woman he invited into the Oval Office," explained one individual. 

Someone else added, "So lazy and inconsiderate he cannot be bothered to stand to hug a woman."

"Doesn’t even have the respect and dignity to stand up and talk to her," one person pointed out. 

Another added, "I don’t get the body language here. A man sits while the woman he brought out to justify a murder by another man he sort of f-ed up on, stands by hopefully? This lacks dignity for all."
