Trump declares 'so it begins' after Zohran Mamdani's fiery NY mayoral victory speech
WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump wasted no time firing back at newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani following the 34-year-old Democrat’s fiery victory speech on Tuesday night. Hours after Mamdani’s remarks, Trump took to Truth Social, posting just four words: “And so it begins!”
The terse message came after Mamdani’s sharp jab at Trump during his victory address, in which he directly called out the president from the stage. “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up!” Mamdani told cheering supporters in Queens, setting an unmistakably combative tone for his administration.

Trump and Zohran Mamdani’s clash signals a new era of political rivalry
The exchange appears to signal the beginning of what could become one of the nation’s most closely watched political rivalries. Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist and the first Muslim mayor in New York City’s modern history, has pledged to make his opposition to Trump’s immigration and economic policies central to his leadership.
“This is not only how we stop Trump, it’s how we stop the next one,” Mamdani declared in his speech, drawing roaring applause. “If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him.”
Trump, meanwhile, has repeatedly warned that New York City could face federal funding cuts under Mamdani’s leadership. Even before the election, the president had hinted at reassessing billions in federal allocations to cities led by progressive Democrats, echoing moves his administration made during his first term against local leaders in California and Illinois.
Zohran Mamdani vows sweeping reforms to tackle cost-of-living crisis
Mamdani’s victory marks a generational shift in New York City politics.
The 34-year-old Queens assemblyman, who rose to prominence after defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primaries earlier this year, campaigned on an ambitious agenda to tackle what he called “the city’s worst cost-of-living crisis since the 1940s.”
His proposals include a citywide rental freeze, universal childcare, and a series of public sector–led initiatives aimed at curbing corporate influence. “We are going to show the world that affordability and dignity can coexist,” Mamdani told his supporters.
Democrats nationwide have hailed Mamdani’s win as a symbol of the party’s revival after what many saw as years of stagnation. Victories across Virginia, New Jersey, and New York, where Democrats swept several key races, have injected fresh momentum into the party less than a year after its crushing defeat in the presidential elections.
But for Trump, the message was simpler and more ominous. His post, “And so it begins,” has already gone viral across social media, suggesting that the next political battleground between the White House and the nation’s largest city is officially underway.
