NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Republicans wasted zero time turning Zohran Mamdani’s stunning victory in New York City into a warning siren.

House Speaker Mike Johnson led the charge, blasting the newly minted mayor-elect as a “true extremist and Marxist” whose win will echo far beyond the five boroughs.

“Democrats in New York City have chosen a true extremist and Marxist, and the consequences will be felt across our entire nation,” Johnson declared on X. “Zohran Mamdani’s election cements the Democrat Party's transformation to a radical, big-government socialist party.”

According to the Louisiana Republican, House Democrats “endorsed Mamdani’s dangerous policies — including defunding the police, seizing private property, and massive tax increases.”

“Now, every House Democrat incumbent and candidate will co-own Mamdani’s disastrous record in the 2026 midterms,” Johnson noted. “Meanwhile, Republicans are fighting alongside President Trump to lower costs, make streets safer, secure our border, and deliver peace through strength."

"With exactly one year to go until the 2026 elections, the contrast between our parties has never been more clear. Mayor-Elect Mamdani's extreme agenda is the future of the Democrat Party — but we will never allow it to be the future of America," he concluded.

A shocker at the polls

The Associated Press called the race for Mamdani, 34, about 40 minutes after polls closed, even with hundreds of thousands of votes still uncounted. By 9:40 pm, Mamdani was leading with 50.4% of the vote, beating out former governor Andrew Cuomo’s 41.3%. Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa scraped together 7.5%.

The result was called with 75% of the votes tallied. The Uganda-born Mamdani isn’t just making history as the Big Apple’s first Muslim and first socialist mayor, he’s also one of the youngest ever to take the reins of City Hall.

The state assemblyman and proud Democratic Socialists of America member was once considered a long shot and brushed off as too radical, too young, too inexperienced. Yet he leaned hard into his “tax the rich” message that drew the ire of business leaders who warned of an economic exodus.

Critics also resurfaced Mamdani’s record on policing, including his past support for defunding the NYPD, and accusations of antisemitism over his years-long criticism of Israel. But none of that slowed him down.

Older voters, including boomers and Gen Xers, showed up stronger in the general election than they had during the primary. But even that late surge wasn’t enough to stop Mamdani's momentum.

Andrew Cuomo’s costly comeback and Trump's message

While Mamdani’s win was somewhat of a surprise, Cuomo’s defeat was rather expensive. The former three-term governor was trying to claw his way back into politics after a bruising exit from Albany, shelling out $12 million on his campaign and receiving another $55 million in super PAC support. But it was all in vain.

Cuomo’s comeback run was already complicated by the presence of Curtis Sliwa on the ballot, splitting off moderate and conservative voters.

President Donald Trump also threw in his last-minute endorsement behind Cuomo just 24 hours before the election.

“Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “You must vote for him and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!”

The president had even threatened to withhold federal funds from New York City if the socialist firebrand won, but it didn't matter in the end.
