WASHINGTONDC: President Donald Trump has called for Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook to step down following accusations related to her mortgage records.

The president’s demand came after Bill Pulte, a top ally and head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, urged an investigation into the central banker.

Bill Pulte accuses Lisa Cook of 'falsifying bank documents'

Bill Pulte released a letter alleging that Lisa Cook had “falsified bank documents and property records to acquire more favorable loan terms.”

He claimed that the mortgages on her homes in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Atlanta, Georgia, “do not meet certain lending requirements” and may have been obtained “under fraudulent circumstances.”

According to Pulte, Cook “falsified residence statuses” in order “to potentially secure lower interest rates and more favorable loan terms.”

Donald Trump echoes call for Lisa Cook to step down

Donald Trump weighed in hours later, writing on Truth Social, “Cook must resign, now!!!” He sided with Pulte’s accusations, suggesting Cook was unfit to serve on the Federal Reserve.

Cook, nominated by former President Joe Biden in 2022, most recently joined the majority on the Federal Open Market Committee in voting to leave rates unchanged during its last meeting.

Pulte, a frequent critic of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, also escalated his attacks online.

“Lisa Cooked is cooked,” he posted. He further claimed that Trump “has cause to fire” Cook.

In another post, Pulte wrote, “I hear Jay Powell is scrambling this morning. He can scramble all he wants, but he might as well be scrambling eggs, because the party at the Fed is OVER!”

He continued in a series of posts on X: “Do not declare two principal residences in President Trump’s America. Mortgage fraud is a serious crime and must be prosecuted as such.”

Internet divided over Trump and Bill Pulte's allegations against Lisa Cook

Online reactions revealed sharp divisions over the allegations and Donald Trump’s response.

“Well, it looks like Governor Lisa Cook committed mortgage fraud. She should resign,” one person wrote.

Another user claimed, “Lisa Cook, Jerome Powell and others are all guilty. Trump is cleaning up the bureaucrat liberal swamp.”

Others pushed back against Trump’s demand. One person wrote, “This is straight-up authoritarianism - weaponizing DOJ to bully Fed officials. Markets should be terrified of this power grab.”

Another commenter warned of broader risks, writing, “Step one: Consolidate control Step two: Bring military into capital Step three: Become dictator.”
