WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump appeared to add fuel to a podcast host's baseless theory that there was an "inside job" behind his Butler rally assassination attempt, saying, "You do have to wonder."

Monica Crowley, a former Fox News host who worked for the Treasury Department under the former president, stoked the conspiracy by charging that investigators were "slow-walking" the probe.

Donald Trump's absurd response to 'inside job' conspiracy theory about assassination attempt

During a podcast interview, Monica Crowley asked Donald Trump, "Does it look increasingly to you like this was a suspicious, maybe even inside job?"

The GOP nominee asserted, without providing evidence, that Democrats are covering the legal costs of the father of the gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks

Despite the fact that the FBI had little trouble unlocking Crooks' phone following the July 13 assassination attempt, Trump said it was "suspicious" that the FBI was unable to open the apps.

This added credence to the dubious speculations regarding the gunman's contacts before the Butler rally shooting.

Trump further suggested that there might be more going on as FBI Director Christopher Wray revealed early on that the organization wasn't sure if a bullet or shrapnel had struck the former president. Later on, the FBI verified that it was a bullet.

"There’s so many things going on here, that you do have to wonder," said the MAGA spearhead, before adding, "I wasn’t thinking this way three weeks ago, but the more you see it, the more you start to say there could be something else and that’s really dangerous for the country," as per HuffPost

Donald Trump compares his case to John F Kennedy's assassination

Donald Trump compared the attempt on his life to the assassination of former President John F Kennedy, which has long given rise to conspiracy theories. He promised to launch an investigation into JFK's 1963 assassination during his first week back in office if re-elected, saying, "It’s harder to get the facts as time goes by."

Crowley claimed the "imperial media" and "regime" have "buried" the story, which "lends credence to this idea that this is very suspicious and could have been an inside job."

Trump replied, "They don’t wanna talk about it. They didn’t want to talk about the election of 2020 either."

Crooks was swiftly shot and killed after he opened fire at Trump while he was speaking at the Butler rally. The FBI declared last week that it had not discovered a clear motive behind the 20-year-old's actions, deeming the campaign event a "target of opportunity" for the assassin.

Internet slams Donald Trump for running with the 'inside job' conspiracy theory

Netizens criticized Donald Trump for making ludicrous accusations without offering much proof and for becoming desperate to appear victimized in public.

One commented, "An 'inside job' wouldn't have involved a shakey kid and an inaccurate rifle. Trump is desperate to be seen as the victim, just like in his court cases."

"Trump is a liar. It is plausible he and Putin planned the fake assassination attempt to garner him sympathy and to boost his campaign. And he would still be pretending to believe someone else did it, just as he accuses others of trying to rig and steal the election when that is his intention," added another.

A person wrote, "This is just a reflection of his delusional sense of his own historical grandure and importance. In his mind he can't be a victim of a mentally ill loner that just saw him as a tool or target of opportunity for gaining infamy."

They added, "No, Trump in his twisted mind is so important and powerful that only a far reaching complex conspiracy among his enemies can possibly be behind such a brazen act of desperation to stop his rightful place in history."

One more remarked, "Trump is a huge liar and I would believe he would be the one to come up with something like this. I sure hope so many get out and vote blue for democracy and that there is no doubt what it is America chooses us."

"Questioning the loyalty of those who are supposed to be willing to give their lives to protect you - classy and smart move, Don," wrote an individual.
