WASHINGTON, DC: A routine White House interaction took an unexpectedly heated turn on Tuesday, May 12 when Donald Trump became visibly frustrated during questions about his ongoing ballroom construction project, sharply rebuking a reporter over a disagreement about its size and budget.

The exchange unfolded on the White House lawn as reporters pressed him on details of the renovation.

During the interaction, Trump was outlining progress on the project, saying the planned ballroom was being expanded significantly while still remaining “under budget” and “ahead of schedule.”

As journalists attempted to interject, confusion over the scale of the expansion prompted further questioning, which quickly escalated tensions.

Trump insisted the project had been enlarged to meet functional needs of the White House.

“I doubled the size of it, you dumb person! Doubled the size!” he said, sharply reacting to the interruption.

When the reporter attempted to continue the line of questioning, Trump cut in again, saying, “You are not a smart person.”

He later reiterated that the expansion was necessary, adding that the ballroom had been redesigned to better accommodate official functions and events, while still claiming it remained within cost expectations.

He said the project was “ahead of schedule” and budget performance depended on final finishing choices.

The ballroom project itself has already drawn attention due to shifting cost estimates.

Initial public figures placed the project at around $200 million, but later projections reportedly doubled to approximately $400 million as design changes and expansion plans were introduced.

Trump's previous shots at press

While Tuesday’s exchange focused on the ballroom project, it was not the first time Trump has reacted sharply during press interactions.

Over the past several months, Trump has repeatedly engaged in heated confrontations with members of the media.

In one instance, he lashed out at Katie Rogers following a report on presidential travel and aging in office, calling her “ugly, both inside and out” in a Truth Social post.

In another widely discussed exchange, he cut off Bloomberg reporter Catherine Lucey aboard Air Force One when she asked about the release of the Epstein-related files, telling her, “Quiet. Quiet, Piggy.”

He has also previously clashed with ABC News correspondent Rachel Scott during a press exchange, where he criticized her reporting style and called her questions unfair while responding to queries about domestic policy priorities and foreign conflicts.

In yet another instance, Trump told a journalist “you’re very obnoxious” during a back-and-forth exchange in which he objected to repeated questioning.
