Trump PAC almost broke after spending millions on legal fees, trolls say only the dumb will invest in him

WASHINGTON, DC: Former President Donald Trump's leadership PAC Save America is facing a cash crunch after spending millions of dollars on his mounting legal expenses, the New York Post reported.

The PAC, which was mainly used to pay the White House hopeful's legal fees, spent nearly $3.6 million on "legal consulting" in March alone, ending the month with little less than $4.1 million cash on hand, according to the filing released by the Federal Election Commission on Saturday, April 20.

Save America has so far spent $59.5 million on Trump's legal expenses since the beginning of 2023 and incurred $886,000 in legal debt last month, as per Politico.

The PAC's cash dip comes amid Trump facing his first criminal trial in the New York hush-money case.

Donald Trump's mounting legal fees

More than $1.1 million was paid in March to two firms representing the former president in the ongoing hush money trial, which took him away from the 2024 presidential campaign trail.

Save America's cash crash is kept afloat by another Trump-supporting PAC, Make America Great Again Inc. At the start of March, it transferred $5 million to Save America as part of a monthly refund of $60 million since July 2023. However, MAGA Inc now owes less than $3 million to Save America, complicating Trump's upcoming legal expenses.

Amid the mounting legal fees, the Republican presidential nominee's campaign has reduced spending on other expenses. For instance, last month, the campaign committee's $3.7 million spending was much lower than the $11.4 million in January.

At the end of March, Trump and the Republican Party together raised more than $65.6 million in campaign funds, and in April, the former president raised a record $50.5 million in a single day at a private event.

The Republican National Committee has claimed that Trump's campaign has not asked the GOP to cover any of his legal expenses. "Anyone who does not want to contribute to that very small amount of money is able to opt out of that … [If you] don't want that specific amount to go to Donald Trump's legal bills, then you are very … you can very easily opt out of that," RNC co-chair Lara Trump said in an interview with NBC News last month.

However, in light of the increasing expenses and cash dip, Trump's advisers last week asked down-ballot candidates to donate 5 per cent of their funds raised using the former president's image, name, and likeness.

Besides the hush money trial, the White House hopeful is spending millions on legal expenses for his three other indictments and two civil cases.

The internet ridiculed Trump over the financial strains amidst the hush money trial.

One user asked, "Where's the money he stole while President?" Another remarked, "Last week he was a billionaire, so what happens now, selling briefs, or worthless stock?"

"This will only get better and better. Soon he’ll need a public defender," a third user added. A fourth response read, "Lara can offer him a forgivable loan...."

Another user quipped, "'Investing' in Trump's legal fees might be dumber than investing in 'Truth' Social. Seems to be a connection there."

"His fam has plenty of questionable $$$$ to give him. I mean, if they love him. HA!" a person mocked. Meanwhile, one individual asked, "When had he EVER PAID HIS BILLS."

Another added, "Gonna be a bunch of lawyers a *whole* lot richer than Trump when this is over. Maybe he'll start paying in planes and hotels?"
