WASHINGTON, DC: Newly elected Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump asserted the national party has no plans to pay the mounting legal expenses of her father-in-law and former President Donald Trump, ABC News reported.

In an interview with NBC News on Wednesday, March 27, the Trump daughter-in-law said the RNC "does not support paying his legal bills."

However, earlier this month, a formal resolution introduced by longtime GOP member Henry Barbour to prevent the RNC from covering the ex-president's legal fees failed within the party.

Lara Trump said donors could opt out of contributing money

Speaking to NBC News, Lara also discussed the newly formed joint fundraising committee that connects the party and the Trump campaign.

The new joint committee would prioritize funneling contributions to ex-president Trump's 2024 campaign and the Save America PAC that has paid most of Trump's legal bills. Here, a small part of the money will go to Save America PAC, which could pay the legal expenses.

The RNC co-chair, however, added that donors could opt out of contributing money that way if they do not want to donate to the legal expenses of the GOP presumptive nominee. Instead, they can donate directly to the RNC or another fundraising vehicle.

"Anyone who does not want to contribute to that very small amount of money is able to opt out of that … [If you] don't want that specific amount to go to Donald Trump's legal bills, then you are very -- you can very easily opt out of that," she said.

Lara's latest statement is a one-eighty-degree turn from her previous remarks. Before ascending to RNC's leadership on March 8 along with Michael Whatley, she suggested that Republican voters would approve if the party funded the former president's legal expenses.

However, at present, she has expanded her view of the GOP's responsibility ahead of a crucial presidential election, stating, "I will ensure that every penny of every dollar is going to causes that Republican voters care about."

In February, Trump's 2024 campaign lagged in fundraising, managing to raise only $10.9, ending the month with $42 million cash on hand, whereas his Democratic opponent, President Joe Biden, had $155 million.

Internet reacts to Lara Trump's statement

Responding to the former president's daughter-in-law's statement about the RNC not paying Trump's legal fees, netizens claimed she was lying.

One user outrightly rejected her remarks as "More lies!!!"

Another person shared a meme that read, "LIES! ALL LIES!!"

"Why are you gaslighting the people you know your splitting the money with maga pac," a third user asked.

"Sorry, lady. I don’t believe a word out of your mouth," someone else wrote.

A fifth response read, "So, who in their right mind would actually believe her?"

"Of course not, Trump hopes to be president so the American people pay for it…. Does anyone doubt that this will be the case?" another person mocked the RNC co-chair's remarks.

A user commented on Facebook, "No one with the name Trump EVER tells the truth - whatever they say, the exact opposite is what we have to expect."

"Lies just roll off their tongues," another remark read. While a person argued, "She is saying it now because big donors are not giving any money to the RNC knowing it will all just go to Trump"s legal bills. But it's just like saying Trump will ahut his mouth."
