WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump said Wednesday, August 19, that he plans to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un again, while unexpectedly putting a precise figure on Pyongyang’s nuclear arsenal.

Trump said North Korea has “57 very powerful nuclear weapons” as he discussed his relationship with Kim and the possibility of another summit later this year.

The comments come as Trump pushes to revive direct engagement with Kim, potentially during his expected November trip to Asia for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in China.

Trump puts nuclear number forward

Trump said he gets along with Kim and argued that maintaining a personal relationship with the North Korean leader is beneficial.

The president then offered his estimate of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal, saying Kim has 57 nuclear weapons and criticizing previous administrations for allowing Pyongyang to develop them.

The figure is notable because estimates of North Korea’s arsenal have traditionally been presented as ranges rather than an exact number.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute estimated in June that North Korea had assembled around 60 warheads as of January 2026, while stressing that significant uncertainty surrounds the country's nuclear capabilities.

Kim enters talks with stronger arsenal

North Korea has continued expanding its nuclear capabilities despite previous diplomatic efforts.

SIPRI said Pyongyang had enough fissile material to potentially produce at least 30 additional warheads and was accelerating production.

Kim has also continued publicly backing the expansion of his country's nuclear forces.

Earlier this year, he committed to developing more nuclear weapons and advanced missile systems, reinforcing concerns that North Korea's arsenal is becoming larger and more sophisticated.

That puts any new Trump-Kim meeting on different terms from their earlier encounters.

Trump prepares another Kim encounter

Trump and Kim previously met in Singapore in 2018 and Hanoi in 2019, followed by their 2019 meeting at the Korean Demilitarized Zone.

A new summit would therefore revive a personal diplomacy strategy that produced high-profile meetings but failed to deliver lasting denuclearization.

Trump's renewed push comes as Washington has also scaled back some US-South Korea military exercises, a move seen as potentially creating space for renewed engagement with Pyongyang.

North Korea has nevertheless rejected the reduced drills as insufficient.

The central question now is whether Trump's personal channel with Kim can produce meaningful negotiations when North Korea enters them with a significantly expanded nuclear capability.
