WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump unveiled a commemorative America 250 US passport featuring his own image and signature, making his personal branding the centerpiece of the limited-edition document.

The design immediately stood out because it places Trump's likeness on an official US travel document created to mark the nation's 250th anniversary. It also replaces an earlier presidential rendering that the State Department released this year.

Trump announced the new passport on Truth Social, posting an image of the commemorative design alongside the message, "The U.S.A.'s New Passport, which says, 'Welcome, but be good!'"

The sample passport page shows Trump seated behind the Resolute Desk, with the text of the original Declaration of Independence filling the background.

His signature appears across the bottom of the page, while the facing page features John Trumbull's iconic painting, 'The Declaration of Independence.'

According to the images released Friday, the portrait appears to be based on Trump's official likeness housed at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington. It differs from artwork previously released by the State Department, which depicted the president using a different illustration.

Later on Friday, the White House shared the same passport design on X, writing, "New U.S. Passport to Commemorate America's 250th."

White House highlights commemorative passport rollout

The commemorative passport was first announced in April as part of nationwide celebrations marking America's 250th anniversary.

At the time, officials described it as "a limited-edition passport to commemorate the historic occasion of America's 250th anniversary," adding that it would feature "custom artwork and enhanced images on the front, back, and inside covers."

The official also told CNN that the commemorative version "will be the default passport out of the Washington Passport Agency when available" for people renewing their passports in person at that location.

The official added, "Online options or other locations will maintain the existing passport design."

New passport replaces earlier presidential artwork

Friday's unveiling provided the clearest look yet at the final design after earlier artwork released by the State Department showed Trump using a different presidential image.

The commemorative passport also marks a notable departure from the current passport's interior artwork.

The existing version features Percy Moran's painting of Francis Scott Key on the inside front cover, depicting the morning after the bombardment of Fort McHenry, the battle that inspired Key to write what later became the national anthem.
