WASHINGTON, DC: The White House announced the launch of the first "Freedom Fuel Network" gas station in Philadelphia this week, selling gasoline at $3.47 a gallon. The administration said the price point was chosen as a direct nod to President Donald Trump as the nation's 47th president and represents more than 50 cents below the Pennsylvania state average.

In a post on social media platform X on Tuesday, the White House announced that the first Freedom Fuel location "has LANDED in Philadelphia."

Freedom Fuel station launch draws praise from drivers

The White House noted that the $3.47 price tag is a nod to Trump, who in his second term serves as the nation's 47th president.

"President Trump is leading the charge to lower gas prices this summer, putting more money in your pocket," the White House added in the post.

A White House spokesperson told CBS News on Wednesday that the company behind the Freedom Fuel Network is private and owns 25 filling stations across New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The spokesperson said the Trump administration is not involved with the company and is not subsidizing the gas stations, adding that the stations can offer lower prices by reducing their profit margins.

"Thanks, Trump, for saving me some money," one Philadelphia-area driver said in the clip, which was shared widely on X and other platforms.

Freedom Fuel Network expands across Pennsylvania and New Jersey

The Freedom Fuel Network has expanded rapidly since its launch, with 25 stations now operating across Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Each location features American flag branding designed to reinforce the patriotic identity of the initiative.

The White House said additional locations are planned.

By comparison, the average regular gas price as of Thursday was $3.84 per gallon nationwide and $3.99 per gallon in Pennsylvania, according to AAA.

President Donald Trump first announced the opening of the gas stations in a Truth Social post last week, in which he said a "VERY smart Retailer, located throughout the Northeast" was behind them and was opening the stations "because they love the U.S.A."

"The Administration is not involved in the company, nor has the Administration given the company any funding," a White House official told TIME.

"There is no other entity or person subsidizing the lower gasoline costs."

"The President has called for companies to lower their prices at the pump; this company responded to the President’s call for action," the White House official said.

"They are simply reducing their margin to make prices at the pump more affordable for drivers in Philadelphia and New Jersey. This retailer is taking the lead, others should follow."

Trump highlights energy affordability push

Earlier in his second term, Trump assured Americans that gas prices would "soon" drop below $2 per gallon.

Trump has long tied energy affordability to his economic agenda, arguing that lower gas prices function as a direct tax cut for working and middle-class Americans who spend a significant portion of their income on transportation.

The Freedom Fuel Network represents the administration's first branded, consumer-facing effort to make that argument visible at the local level.
