WASHINGTON, DC: New information detailing what led to the failure of the trade talks has left onlookers stunned, revealing that the Trump administration repeatedly made new demands and turned Canada’s sovereignty into a negotiation term.
The longstanding trade negotiation between the US and Canada fell through on Friday, August 21, prompting Washington to impose a 50% tariff on certain Canadian products.
Ottawa responded with a resolution to impose retaliatory import taxes on American products, vowing “dollar for dollar.”
US encroached on Canada's sovereignty in trade talks
After the announcement of sweeping tariffs against a number of Canadian goods by the US, speculation around terms that caused the talks to fail intensified.
Several news outlets and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney himself spoke about the Trump administration’s last-minute demands that critics argued "encroached on Canadian sovereignty."
Carney claimed that Trump demanded, “Canada change its French language.”
As per reports, Carney revealed that the Trump administration “introduced language in the final hours of negotiations that would have restricted Canada’s ability to make trade deals with other countries.”
Accepting such terms, Carney said, would have reduced Canada to “the economic equivalent of the 51st state.”
Critics call Trump's demands 'insanity' and 'annexation'

The former US Ambassador to Jamaica, Luis Moreno, called the Trump administration’s demands “utter and total insanity.”
On the other hand, a notable entrepreneur, Arnaud Bertrand, described the demands as “de facto annexation” and “insane.”
Author and military researcher Chris Owen argued there was no scenario in which Canada would even entertain such demands.
More details here. The US wanted Canada to automatically mirror US tariffs and break its own existing trade deals with its partners - in effect running Ottawa's trade policy from Washington. No country could have accepted that. https://t.co/mCcrWttipX

Writing a Truth Social post, President Donald Trump expressed his frustration with Canada after the failure of the trade deal, stating that Canada wants to have the benefits of an American state without being one.
“Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!! They have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more,” Trump wrote on Sunday.
President Donald Trump’s trade negotiations with Canada collapsed, triggering new US tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian imports.
Canadian Prime Minister Carney suspended the trade talks, stating that the final changes proposed by Washington were unacceptable, while the United States said Ottawa had backed away from commitments reached earlier in the week.
