NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: The House Oversight Committee announced on Friday, May 10, that it is launching an investigation into the administration of incumbent President Joe Biden over its threat to withhold weapons shipments to Israel.

According to Fox News, Biden stated during an interview on Wednesday that he would not supply the ally nation in the Middle East with offensive weapons if they started a military operation in Rafah in southern Gaza.

The city is currently home to more than a million Palestinian refugees who had to flee from across the state as a result of Israel's assault.

However, Biden assured Israel that it would continue to obtain defensive support from the United States, such as those required in the running of its Iron Dome.

Statement of Committee Chairman James Comer

Rep James Comer (R-Ky) wrote a letter to Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, where he questioned both the decision-making process and the timing of the president's announcement.

He also requested the White House National Security Council to appear for a congressional briefing, and hand over all communications of related discussions within two weeks.

"The Committee is alarmed by the Biden administration’s willingness to play political games with US taxpayer-funded assistance going to Israel," read Comer's letter. "On May 9, 2024, President Biden made public that he would not supply offensive weapons that Israel could use in its offensive on Rafah—the last major Hamas stronghold in Gaza."

"Further reporting indicates that the National Security Council actively chose to withhold this information from the public eye for days, in part so that news of the decision would not be known when President Biden delivered a speech touting support for Israel on Holocaust Remembrance Day. The Committee seeks a briefing, as well as documents and information related to this decision, including any legal justification for withholding essential supplies from Israel in its fight against Hamas terrorists who still have Israeli and American hostages."

"The Committee finds both the decision to withhold essential military aid and hiding that decision from the public for political purposes disturbing, especially given that on President Biden’s first day in office, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki pledged that the administration would, ‘bring transparency and truth back to government.’ Hiding information from the public for political gain does not meet this Committee’s definition of transparency," continued the letter, which was signed by GOP Members on the Oversight Committee.

"The Biden administration’s priorities appear to be motivated by public perception, and not what is best for national security or diplomacy," it added.

Internet reacts to new investigation

Netizens were not on board with the launch of the new investigation, as the following tweets demonstrate.

"Honestly, this sounds like a lot of political posturing on both sides," wrote a user.

"Sounds like typical political drama. Seems every administration has some sort of investigation going on. Not surprised, just feels like more of the same back and forth," stated another.

"All Talk," jibed a third.

"Comer is just going to humiliate himself again. These guys never learn," commented a fourth.

"This is so damn stupid," shared a fifth user.
