CANTON, GEORGIA: Second lady Usha Vance on Thursday, August 21, lauded first lady Melania Trump for her recently revealed “peace letter” to Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling her a “role model” and “trailblazer.”

Speaking to Fox News Digital while visiting the Cherokee Classical Academy in Canton, Georgia, as part of her 2025 Summer Reading Challenge tour, Ms Vance highlighted her admiration for Mrs Trump’s focus on children.

“I have admired her approach to many things, but at the top of the list, she really does care about children,” Usha Vance said of Melania Trump. “She cares about their welfare. And I think every time that she uses her voice to tell people how important it is to keep children safe and to make sure that they grow up happy and healthy, it’s a good thing.”

She added, “So, I see that as a role model.”

Although Vance said she has no plans to pen her own letter at the moment, she stressed that she views Melania’s outreach as groundbreaking. “I don’t have a specific letter or anything I am planning on writing at this time, but she’s a trailblazer in that respect,” she said.

Melania Trump’s emotional appeal to protect children

The first lady’s letter was hand-delivered to Putin just ahead of the US–Russia summit in Alaska, where President Trump met with the Russian leader last Friday.

“Dear President Putin,” the first lady’s letter began. In the letter, Melania urged Putin to prioritize the well-being of children worldwide.

“Every child shares the same quiet dreams in their heart, whether born in the rustic countryside or a magnificent city-center,” she wrote. “They dream of love, possibility, and safety from danger.”

The note continued with a plea for global responsibility. “As parents, it is our duty to nurture the next generation’s hope. As leaders, the responsibility to sustain our children extends beyond the comfort of a few. Undeniably, we must strive to paint a dignity-filled world for all — so that every soul may wake to peace, and so that the future itself is perfectly guarded”

Melania concluded with a direct appeal, “In protecting the innocence of these children, you will do more than serve Russia alone — you serve humanity itself. Such a bold idea transcends all human division, and you, Mr Putin, are fit to implement this vision with a stroke of the pen today. It is time.”

While praising Melania Trump, the second lady was simultaneously advancing her own initiative, the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge, which launched in June. The program is designed to encourage children across the United States to read throughout the summer, track their progress, and cultivate a lifelong love of books.

At the Cherokee Classical Academy, Vance visited three classrooms, observed lessons in writing and math, and interacted with dozens of young students. To cap off her visit, she read Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s classic poem Paul Revere’s Ride to an audience of nearly 200 children before taking questions.
