WASHINGTON, DC: Van Jones, the political commentator for CNN, expressed strong disapproval of the Supreme Court's ruling on Monday, July 1 that former presidents will have broad immunity from criminal prosecution while in office.

The court's decision is considered a significant victory for former president Donald Trump as it sends his federal case in connection to the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, back to a lower court, which will delay the trial until after the presidential election in November, pending further information on the charges, according to The Hill.

Van Jones says immunity ruling is 'going to go down bad politically' for Supreme Court

On Monday, July 1, the political commentator voiced his concerns about the outcome of the Supreme Court's decision if Donald Trump were reelected, “Politically, it’s almost like a ‘license to thug,’ in a way.”

“Like, you can do whatever you want, and the Supreme Court is probably going to let you get away with it. That is very frightening in this case, and so I’m very, very concerned," he continued.

The six-three ruling by the Supreme Court along ideological lines decided the former president has broad immunity when it comes to his official acts during his presidency.

“Do you more care about the unlawful conduct of a sitting president or possibly the unfair prosecution of a former president? They’re obviously more concerned about the latter," said Jones

The political analyst said the ruling “makes the Supreme Court look very partisan.”

“They’re supposed to be wearing these, kind of, black-and-white umpire jerseys, or whatever. They look like they’re wearing red jerseys, or even MAGA hats. It’s going to go down bad politically for the Supreme Court,” he said.

Donald Trump says Supreme Court's decision should end Joe Biden's 'witch hunts' against him

Just after the Supreme Court announced the decision regarding presidential immunity, Donald Trump took to Truth Social to celebrate the ruling as he wrote, "Big win for our constitution and democracy, Proud to be an American!"

In a separate Truth Social post on Monday, July 1, the former president further noted, "Today’s Historic Decision by the Supreme Court should end all of Crooked Joe Biden's Witch Hunts against me, including the New York Hoaxes - The Manhattan SCAM cooked up by Soros backed DA, Alvin Bragg, Racist New York Attorney General Tish James’ shameless ATTACK on the amazing business that I have built, and the FAKE Bergdorf’s 'case.' PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!"
