NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Vice President Kamala Harris took to X (formerly Twitter) to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for a minimum of six weeks on March 3, 2024.

However, netizens were quick to point out the irony in her stance, with the United States remaining a key ally of Israel and its largest supplier of military aid. While the US had earlier proposed a temporary ceasefire, it also vetoed UN resolutions calling for an immediate halt of the conflict.

Harris' stand comes at a time when the death toll in Gaza has crossed 30,000, with over 70,000 being reported injured, according to CNN.

From her personal account on the social media platform, Harris shared a clip from a press conference where she said, "Given the immense scale of suffering in Gaza, there must be an immediate ceasefire for at least the next six weeks, which is what is currently on the table."

"This will get the hostages out, and get a significant amount of aid in. This would allow us to build something more enduring, to ensure Israel is secure, and to respect the right of the Palestinian people, to dignity, freedom, and self-determination," she continued.

"Hamas claims it wants a ceasefire. Well, there is a deal on the table. And as we have said, Hamas needs to agree to that deal. Let's get a ceasefire. Let's reunite the hostages with their families. And let's provide immediate relief to the people of Gaza," she added.

Along with the clip, Harris wrote in her post, "What we are seeing every day in Gaza is devastating, and our common humanity compels us to act. Given the immense scale of suffering in Gaza, there must be an immediate ceasefire for at least the next six weeks."

Internet slams Kamala Harris for US not taking any action at UN and supporting Israel

Netizens were not sold on the Vice President's calls for a ceasefire as they slammed her for not suspending military aid and arms sales to Israel.

"Why have you not said or done anything for months? Why are you not suspending arms sales? financing? and using sanctions to stop the barbarity? Why?" asked a social media user.

"There must be a permanent ceasefire not just for the next six weeks! That would just be a temporary solution! A permanent ceasefire is advisable whilst peace talks commence!" exclaimed another.

"Have you just woken up from a 5 month stupor? Why has the US repeatedly vetoed ceasefire votes at the UN? This statement means nothing 5 months on and again, with ZERO action. There needs to b an immediate ans permanent ceasefire and for the US to stop providing weapons. NOW!" stated a third.

"Just six weeks? You cannot pause a genocide. You just want the Palestinians gone," commented a fourth.

"The US has stood by Israel as an ally. But humanitarian efforts need to take precedent!" another noted.
