PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA: Senator John Fetterman found himself in hot water after insisting that progressivism has 'left him' and he thinks people on both the far right and left ‘are hoping that I die’.

The 58-year-old Pennsylvania Democrat has angered progressives with his outspoken support for Israel after Hamas launched a brutal surprise attack on October 7, where terrorists killed more than 1,200 people and kidnapped hundreds of others.

His ardent support for Israel has led some leftists to brand him as "Genocide John." Addressing the backlash, the Democrat recently told the New York Times that he's not interested in his party's "bizarre" purity tests.

"It’s just a place where I’m not," he told the Times, adding "I don’t feel like I’ve left the label; it’s just more that it’s left me." Fetterman additionally acknowledged that the far-left has turned against him because of his evident support for Israel.

"What I have found out over the last couple of years is that the right, and now the left, are hoping that I die," he explained. "There are ones that are rooting for another blood clot. They have both now been wishing that I die,” he added, referencing his near-fatal stroke from last year.

John Fetterman double downs on his support for Israel

A deep intra-party rift has broken out among Democrats as the death toll in Gaza continues to rise and even President Biden has accused Israel of an 'indiscriminate bombing campaign'.

But Fetterman has defied calls for a cease-fire and placed pictures of the hostages that Hamas took during the unexpected raid outside his Senate office.

Talking about his support for Israel, he told the Times “I do find it confusing where the very left progressives in America don't seem to want to support really the only progressive nation in the region that really embraces the same kind of values I would expect we would want as a society.”

Later, Fetterman affirmed that he still supports a number of progressive objectives, such as legalizing marijuana, a $15 minimum wage, universal health care, and doing away with the Senate filibuster.

However, he stated that he no longer feels that he fits the progressive moniker, particularly in light of appeals from the left that run counter to his positions.

Fetterman broke with progressives earlier this week when he wrote on X, that "I'm not a progressive, I'm just a regular Democrat." TV snippets from Fetterman's campaign trail, in which he declared himself to be a progressive, were added to the flood of responses.

Internet reacts to John Fetterman’s remarks

Fetterman’s remarks have garnered immense social media attention, with users slamming him for claiming that he thinks people on both the far right and left are wishing he would die.

“Victimhood works well this time of year,” one user mocked. “Wow, so dramatic. A long-term coma would serve just as well,” a second user trolled.

“Clearly, the Democrats are not paying him enough to tow the party line. However, he has pleasantly surprised me,” the third user blasted while the fourth one said, “I think it’s hilarious karma for the left. Shouldn’t have attacked Dr. Oz 🤣🤣🤣

“Not just that you grow a conscience idk,” the fifth user stated. “After your based takes lately, I’m sure it’s the Democrats that you want to croak,” another user wrote.
