SAN ANDREAS, CALIFORNIA: A video of a tense confrontation aboard a California school bus is drawing attention after a woman is seen climbing through one of the vehicle’s windows and confronting the driver.

The footage comes from an incident that took place Monday, August 24, in Calaveras County.

Details reported by local media and authorities indicate the confrontation began after a student attempted to climb through a window while the bus was stopped.

Viral video captures bizarre confrontation

A 12-year-old student who was aboard the bus reportedly said the driver responded by ordering the children to remain seated and close the windows.

The student said the driver also told them they would have to wait for law enforcement before they could leave.

Some of the children then contacted their parents, bringing several adults to the scene.

One of them, Nichole Wellington, spoke to local media and said she went to the bus after her son told her he was frightened.

She said she asked the driver to let him off, but he refused. Wellington eventually told her son to leave through a window, according to her account.

The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office later said several students had exited the bus through open windows.

Another parent, Rebecca Glover, said her two children were also aboard, but she instructed them to stay inside.

She said the situation involved the safety of all the children on the bus and that the driver had to account for everyone.

Video below shows the confrontation unfold and garnered over 2 million views in less than 10 hours.

Parent arrested for vandalism

The situation escalated further when a parent reportedly struck the school bus door, causing the glass to shatter, according to the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office.

The parent was later taken into custody for vandalism at the request of the school district.

Following the incident, authorities reminded parents and students that the windows on school buses are intended to serve as emergency exits and should not ordinarily be used to leave the vehicle during routine situations.

Superintendent Kassandra Meeks also said the district reviewed video of the incident and is taking appropriate action involving the students who were involved.

Officials said students should follow established safety procedures unless there is an actual emergency.

Officials have not indicated that the confrontation resulted in any serious injuries, although the incident caused significant disruption and prompted concerns about student safety and appropriate procedures aboard school buses.
