Scott Bessent optimistic about $3/gallon gas this summer
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he is optimistic that Americans could see gas prices drop to around $3 per gallon this summer, offering some relief after recent spikes driven by global tensions and energy disruptions.
Speaking at a White House briefing, Bessent said he expects prices to fall “sometime between June 20 and September 20,” adding that he hopes gas prices will decline as quickly as they rose when crude oil surged.
His outlook comes as the U.S. navigates the impact of the Iran conflict and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route. Bessent noted that improving conditions in global energy markets — particularly if shipping routes reopen — could help bring prices down.
Currently, gas prices remain elevated, with national averages above $4 per gallon in some areas, highlighting the gap between current costs and the administration’s summer target.
