"No One Will Ever Know What We Went Through" - Artemis II Crew Breaks Down in Emotional First Speech After Moon Mission
The Artemis II crew is home — and their first words back on Earth were not scripted, polished, or rehearsed. They were real. And they hit differently because of it.
Standing at Ellington Field just hours after splashdown, Commander Reid Wiseman admitted he had absolutely no idea what to say. And then he said everything. He pointed out that just 24 hours earlier, Earth was the size of a small dot out the window of their capsule and they were hurtling through space at Mach 39. Now they were home. The whiplash of that reality — from the edge of the universe to a runway in Houston in a single day — was written all over his face.
Wiseman turned to his crewmates Victor, Christina, and Jeremy and told them directly — they are bonded forever. That no one on the ground will ever fully understand what the four of them experienced together out there. He called it the most special thing that will ever happen in his life.
He then acknowledged the families standing nearby — saying that while the world celebrated the crew, nobody talks about what the families went through during those days when their loved ones were 200,000 miles away and there was nothing anyone could do but wait. In a moment that drew gasps and laughter in equal measure, he also revealed a deeply human plan for the rest of his day — a McDonald's run, in honor of a fallen colleague's husband whose wife was in the audience.
This was not a press conference. This was four human beings trying to find words for something that may not have words yet.
In this video, we cover:
