Viral video shows airman’s fatal plunge from rafters as military demonstration ends in tragedy
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS: A military demonstration meant to honor US service members turned deadly at a Texas football stadium on Saturday, October 17, after an Air Force service member fell during a rope descent from the roof of the venue.
Viral video of the incident has captured the terrifying moment, with fans gathered in the stands and a marching band on the field as the demonstration took place.
The service member was taken to a hospital after the fall but died from his injuries, according to Nellis Air Force Base. His identity had not been released at the time of reporting.
Military rappel kills airman mid-ceremony in front of thousands. He lost control sliding from the Alamodome rafters before UTSA-Navy, hit hard near midfield and was carried off Priority 1. Air Force later confirmed he died. These demos look routine until gravity wins. Expertise doesn’t cancel the risk. Is the pregame spectacle worth it? Follow : @burntoast317

Viral video shows fatal fall during military demonstration
The airman was one of four service members expected to participate in the pregame display at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
The demonstration was part of UTSA's annual Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans game, which featured the Navy Midshipmen.
The service member reportedly fell onto the middle of the playing field.
Video shared on social media shows him descending feet-first before the fall.
Attempts were made to revive him on the field first, but he was later taken to the hospital.
Nellis Air Force Base said he was assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2.
The incident is under investigation and officials have not announced what caused the fall.
The accident happened before kickoff, during a ceremony intended to recognize military personnel and veterans.
The specialists involved in the demonstration work alongside Army and Marine units, helping coordinate air support and artillery strikes from forward ground positions.
Their training includes rappelling, which allows personnel to descend quickly by rope from elevated locations. They also practice rappelling from helicopters hovering more than 100 feet above the ground..
An airman tragically lost his life at the Alamodome last night while helping honor our military before the UTSA–Navy game. San Antonio is grieving with his family today. My prayers are with them and with everyone he served alongside.

Tragedy sends shockwaves
The impact of the incident was evident even before the University of Texas at San Antonio football team’s game against Navy got underway.
UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor reportedly said he had initially been told only that an incident would delay the start of the game by roughly 10 minutes.
When the players emerged onto the field, he noticed a striking change in the atmosphere among the more than 23,000 people in attendance.
He described the incident as heartbreaking and tragic, adding that it had put the game into perspective.
The university's president, Taylor Eighmy, also expressed condolences to the serviceman's family and military colleagues.
He said an event intended to bring people together had instead been marked by profound sadness.
