CANNES, FRANCE: Rihanna left a fan laughing outside her hotel in Cannes on Friday, July 31, after a misunderstanding over a photo request turned into a memorable interaction.
The singer, who was accompanied by her husband ASAP Rocky, initially thought the fan wanted her to take his picture instead of posing with him. The playful exchange came after another recent fan interaction in which she comforted a woman living with cancer during a grocery store visit.
Rihanna and ASAP Rocky turn Cannes photo mix-up into a fan moment
As Rihanna exited her hotel with ASAP Rocky, a French fan who was not fluent in English approached her while calling out her name and saying, “A picture of you.” Misunderstanding his request, she took the phone from him and pointed it toward the fan, assuming he wanted her to take his photo.
“You want me to take a picture of you? I'mma crush that. How you gonna pose?” she joked as she held the phone.
The fan then gestured that he actually wanted Rihanna to be in the picture with him. Realizing the misunderstanding, she laughed and replied, “Oh, you want me in it?”
The rapper then stepped in and held the phone to take the picture of Rihanna with the fan. As the interaction wrapped up, the fan told Rihanna she was "beautiful," prompting Rocky to jokingly respond, “Relax on the compliments, buddy,” making everyone laugh.
The fan later shared a carousel of the entire interaction on Instagram and wrote, “Thank you so much for the photos, Rihanna.” The playful exchange followed another memorable fan encounter that highlighted her kindness.
During a segment titled 'Jason Lee Unlocked: Grocery Shopping with Rihanna,' shared by Jason Lee on Monday, July 6, a fan told the singer, “I look terrible. I live with cancer. Can I take a picture with you?”
Without hesitation, she agreed and immediately reassured her, “You don’t look terrible,” before posing for a photo. When the fan explained that she was not wearing her wig and that “Everyone knows me,” Rihanna wrapped an arm around her after learning they shared the same first name, Robyn, saying, “And your name’s Robyn, like mine.”
Rihanna reaches career milestones while preparing for new music
Rihanna has also continued reaching major career milestones. As of April 2026, she became the first woman to surpass 200 million RIAA singles certifications despite not releasing an album in 10 years. She ranks third on the all-time list with 200.5 million certified units, behind Drake with 277.5 million and Morgan Wallen with 215 million.
Her last studio album, 'ANTI,' was released in 2016. Since then, she has recorded 'Lift Me Up' for 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' in 2022 and 'Friends of Mine' for 'Smurfs' in 2025.
Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar in 2025 about her long-awaited next album, Rihanna explained why she had taken so much time before releasing new music.
“There's no genre now. That's why I waited. Every time, I was just like, ‘No, it's not me. It's not right. It's not matching my growth. It's not matching my evolution. I can't do this. I can't stand by this. I can't perform this for a year on tour,’” she said.
She added, “After a while, I looked at it, and I was like, this much time away from music needs to count for the next thing everyone hears. It has to count. It has to matter. I have to show them the worth in the wait. I cannot put up anything mediocre.”
The 'Diamonds' singer also teased that it was going to be unlike "anything that anybody expects" and would not be "commercial or radio digestible."
