WEST HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA: An overnight infrastructure failure spiraled into a full-blown crisis across West Hollywood. By Thursday, July 16 morning, stretches near the Sunset Strip were overwhelmed by rushing water, vehicles sat stranded mid-flood and a sidewalk had collapsed into a gaping sinkhole.

As the scene unfolded across the internet, the sudden scale of the flooding became impossible to ignore.

Water races through West Hollywood streets

Water tore through the area with noticeable force, spreading quickly across streets and pushing its way toward vehicles in the Sunset Plaza stretch.

In several instances, people were seen wading through inches of standing water, while a wider view of the scene revealed just how far the flooding had extended across surrounding blocks.

Vehicles were left stranded as rising water swallowed portions of the roadway, with reports indicating that the overflow also seeped into some ground-floor apartments and underground parking structures.

But the situation took a sharper turn soon after.

A section of sidewalk along Palm Avenue, just south of Sunset, suddenly collapsed, creating a sinkhole.

According to a witness who spoke to media outlets, two people fell into the opening, though neither was believed to have sustained serious injuries.

The collapse was reported near the intersection of Holloway Drive and Palm Avenue, outside Dialog Cafe, as crews continued working to manage the fallout from the flooding.

Authorities assess damage due to flooding

The flooding was traced back to a water main rupture that began near Palm Avenue and Harratt Street at around 2:30 am, according to officials.

Authorities later identified the damaged infrastructure as a 36-inch trunk line installed in 1916, highlighting the age of the system involved in the incident.

Crews moved quickly to shut down the affected line and began working through a network of large valves connected to it.

However, officials cautioned that stopping the flow would take time rather than happen immediately.

Because the system operates under significant pressure, the shutdown had to be handled gradually to avoid making the situation worse.

As crews worked to contain the damage, city officials, including Mayor Karen Bass, visited the site to assess the situation.

The disruption also spilled into public transit, with Metro announcing route diversions impacting parts of Lines 16 and 105.
