White House hits back at CNN broadcast featuring Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

The White House criticized Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for their comments at the CNN town hall. A statement from Communications Director Steven Cheung’s office said, "Last night’s CNN clown show starring Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Crazy Bernie Sanders was nothing more than a desperate smokescreen to hide the brutal reality of the Democrat Shutdown. Chuck Schumer and his band of obstructionists—on orders from the radical left lunatics in control of the party—deliberately shuttered the government to extort their socialist agenda at the expense of hardworking Americans."

The statement highlighted President Trump’s efforts to ensure “service members get paid” and protect “critical nutrition assistance programs for low-income women and children.” Democrats were accused of hypocrisy, failing to act on promises.

The statement further criticized Sanders, saying, "He had no answer for why he previously called a government shutdown ‘a serious and dangerous action that we must do everything possible to prevent.’ He was left stuttering after a young man pointed out Chuck Schumer’s hypocrisy."

The White House also attacked Ocasio-Cortez, stating, "AOC told a TSA employee, an essential worker unsure of her next paycheck, that ‘the best thing we can do is to reopen the government.’ What she didn’t mention is that only Democrats can make that happen, and they’ve refused to do so ten times in a row."

Concluding, the statement said, "Democrats can’t explain why they’re holding the government funding or offer any solutions to the chaos they’ve unleashed."

Why did AOC and Bernie Sanders’ CNN remarks draw White House rebuttal

During the CNN town hall, Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called for immediate congressional action to secure long-term Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies. Both criticized Republican leaders for delays and lack of genuine negotiations amid the government shutdown. The 90-minute event, moderated by CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, highlighted the divide between Democrats and Republicans in resolving the crisis.

Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez warned that the nation’s health care system could face serious consequences if Republicans fail to include ACA subsidies in any deal to reopen the federal government.
