MANHATTAN, NEW YORK CITY: As the 2024 election draws nearer, Donald Trump and his supporters are raising a single question: 'Are you better off today than four years ago?'

However, 'The View' host Whoopi Goldberg finds this question to be lacking in insight and respect.

Countering Trump allies' claims

To start off the Hot Topics discussion on April 1, the show aired a compilation of Trump's allies posing this question in various media appearances, followed by the response from the Joe Biden campaign.

It was a video reminding viewers of the challenging circumstances the country faced four years ago, amid a severe pandemic, with Trump dismissively stating that fatalities were inevitable.

The hosts predominantly praised Joe Biden for his robust counter-argument before delving into their own perspectives. Goldberg highlighted a couple of significant indicators suggesting that conditions have worsened.

"Black people, we were not in this insanity of trying to figure out why our history is no longer welcome in the educational system," she noted.

"Women were realizing something was happening. If you were coming from another country, if you were coming to this country to find a better life, you were not welcome. Listen, it wasn’t a good time for lots of people".

But what particularly irked her was the stark reality that four years ago, the nation was grappling with a deadly pandemic that claimed thousands of lives, compounded by the Trump campaign's efforts to undercut the response.

“Black people, we were not in this insanity of trying to figure out why our history is no longer welcome in the educational system,” Whoppi Goldberg said (@TheView/Youtube)

"All you have to do to ask, ‘Are we better off than we were?’ Ask the thousands of people who are no longer here," she retorted sharply.

Adding further, she said, "That’s how you know if we’re better off. Ask their families, are they better off without their loved ones? What a stupid question. It’s a stupid question, and disrespectful to the American people, in my opinion."

Goldberg's remarks on 'The View' sparks debate

Whoopi Goldberg's remarks sparked a whirlwind of responses on social media, with some users applauding her perspective while others criticized it vehemently.

While one said, "Anyone with common sense would know 4 years ago isn’t meant literally. It means comparing economic status during the previous administration vs. the current administration. Inflation, home affordability and overall quality of life are what most Americans will be basing it on."

Another said, "I was much better 4 years ago. I could buy better food, afford my mortgage, bills… now it takes 2 jobs to do all."

One other viewer said, "Absolutely better than 4 years ago."

"As a business owner, I am not better off at all; and they are closing health care centers all over around here," another voiced.

"Absolutely not," said one more viewer.

"Why don't you just stop picking on him. You are nothing but a big bully," another viewer took a jab at Goldberg.
