Whoopi Goldberg welcomes second great-grandchild, reveals newborn’s unique name
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Whoopi Goldberg walked into the taping of 'The View' on Monday, December 8, with the kind of joy only a growing family can bring.
The 70-year-old EGOT winner announced that she welcomed her second great-grandchild over the weekend — a baby girl, her grandson Mason Dean and his girlfriend Hylee Whitley named Lotus Marley Dean.
Whoopi Goldberg beams as she reveals baby Lotus arrived over the weekend
Whoopi Goldberg couldn’t wait to share the news with viewers. “I’m going to start out today because I have some fun news from over the weekend,” she announced, describing how her family welcomed little Lotus into the world. “She’s 6 pounds, 3 ounces,” she added proudly.
A family photo flashed on screen as she pointed out their newest addition. “That’s Lotus, and that’s Ruby the dog. That’s her dad, my grandson Mason,” she said, beaming. Her co-hosts immediately erupted into congratulations and even gave a cheerful shoutout to Goldberg’s daughter, Alex Martin, now a grandmother of two.
Goldberg-Martin-Dean family tree continues to expand
For Whoopi Goldberg, becoming a great-grandmother isn’t new; she first stepped into the role at age 58 in 2014, when her eldest grandchild, Amarah, welcomed daughter Charli Rose. Alex, 51, shares Amarah, Jerzey, and Mason with husband Bernard Dean.
This time, it was Mason who took to Instagram, sharing tender photos of him cradling his newborn daughter. His girlfriend Hylee posted Polaroids from the hospital bed, writing that they welcomed their “sweet angel” on Friday, December 5.
One snapshot of Mason staring lovingly at baby Lotus prompted Sunny Hostin to gush, “And he looks in love. He absolutely does.”
Goldberg, ever the comedian, deadpanned: “Yeah, that’ll change.”
Whoopi Goldberg reflects on becoming a great-grandmother again
After the initial wave of congratulations, Whoopi Goldberg opened up about the significance of entering great-grandmotherhood for the second time. “It’s a wonderful thing,” she said softly. “This is my second.”
When Hostin asked what her great-grandbabies call her — “Glam-ma or…?” - Goldberg quickly set the record straight. “No, they call me Whoopi, because I’m not the grandma, I’m the great-grandma! So just Whoopi.”
Co-host Sara Haines jumped in, mimicking Goldberg’s first great-grandchild Charli calling her “Oopi.” Goldberg laughed. “She couldn’t say her Ws, so I was ‘Oopi’ for the longest time,” she explained.
Whoopi Goldberg isn’t planning on being a ‘regular’ great-grandma
Whoopi Goldberg has always been upfront about her unconventional approach to grandmotherhood.
When Charli was born in 2014, she famously told Jimmy Fallon, “I wasn’t your normal grandmother, and I’m not going to be your normal great-grandmother.” She declared back then: “She better call me Whoopi.”
More than a decade later, nothing has changed except the size of her family.
