WASHINGTON, DC: When Congressman Matt Gaetz led the charge to remove former Rep Kevin McCarthy from his leadership position last year, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said that Gaetz had 'unleashed the demons', according to The Hill.

Notably, in response to a question from Fox anchor Laura Ingraham on the reasons behind the departure of several House Republicans before the end of their tenure, such as Representatives Ken Buck (R-Colo) and Mike Gallagher (R-Wisc), Gingrich gave his reply.

Newt Gingrich believes Matt Gaetz's efforts in 2023 caused 'disaster' in lower chamber

Gingrich stated that the lower chamber has been a 'disaster' ever since Gaetz's attempt to remove McCarthy from office last year and it should not be downplayed.

Gingrich said during 'The Ingraham Angle' on Friday, March 22, "Well I think, first of all, you’d have to have a totally different approach. We shouldn’t underestimate how bad what Matt Gaetz did was for the whole system. He unleashed the demons, he went after somebody who would raise $480 million, had gained seats for three elections in a row, and he drove Kevin McCarthy out of office. From that point on, it has been a disaster."

The former house speaker stated that he did not hold current Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La) accountable for the legislative output of the chamber because of the challenging circumstances surrounding his removal following McCarthy's departure.

He said, "I don’t blame Johnson, I think Speaker Johnson has a hand that’s virtually impossible to play and that’s where I think some of the people just make it worse."

Moreover, Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga), one of Johnson’s top critics since he took the gavel, has filed a motion to vacate on Friday, March 22, the same procedural move that booted McCarthy in October.

Although she described it as a 'warning', she also indicated that she did not 'have a timeline' for forcing a vote on the resolution, which is not privileged at the moment and would not be discussed after the Easter break.

According to Gingrich, all of these events provide strong evidence for Republicans' need for a bigger majority in the House to accommodate differences while attempting to enact legislation, in addition to having the former President Trump in the White House.

Internet weighs in as Newt Gingrich states Matt Gaetz's efforts in 2023 caused 'disaster'

Several internet users chimed in with their comments after the statement by Newt Gingrich. A user posted on X, "They are all Newt's progeny," while one added, "If they fail their voters they need to be replaced. It's as simple as that! No matter how many times it takes to find someone that still represents Americans."

A user also wrote, "Sorry, YOU unleashed the demons!!" while one mentioned, "Funny how the demons are all republicans." A user also wrote, "Well duh - dumping McCarthy was the dumbest thing they could do - so they did it."
