ROME, GEORGIA: During a campaign stop in Rome, Georgia, President Donald Trump shared a dramatic story about a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron, claiming he had to raise his voice repeatedly until Macron agreed to his demands on drug pricing. The anecdote came on February 19, during Trump’s “Affordability Tour,” where he promoted his efforts to cut medicine costs for Americans.

Trump told the crowd he shouted “you’re gonna do it!” at Macron until the French leader relented. He claimed he told Macron, “Emanuel, you have to lift your price by double or triple,” and that Macron initially refused.

According to Trump, the turning point came when he threatened a 100% tariff on French wine and champagne. Macron then supposedly said, “I will do it. I will gladly do it.” Trump acted out the exchange for the audience, mimicking both sides of the conversation.

Before recounting the call, Trump emphasized his administration’s work to lower drug costs. He claimed prices have dropped by unprecedented amounts, saying, “We’re slashing drug prices by 400, 500, even 600%. Nobody’s ever seen anything like it.” Trump encouraged Republicans to use this issue in upcoming elections, arguing Americans now pay some of the lowest medicine prices in the world.

Trump credits tariffs for negotiating with foreign leaders

Trump described using tariffs as leverage to influence foreign nations’ policies, including France. He claimed he called multiple world leaders to tell them to raise drug prices so the US would not bear the global financial burden. “I said, ‘Emanuel, you’re going to have to double the price…’ But that’s a lot for a politician,” Trump added, framing his approach as tough but effective in protecting American taxpayers.
