KYIV, UKRAINE: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy communicated with reporters on Monday, December 29, sharing insights from his meeting with Donald Trump.
Zelenskyy had made his way to Mar-a-Lago, Florida, on Sunday to speak with Trump about achieving peace between Ukraine and Russia.
Zelenskyy told the reporters that Trump had agreed to send “strong security guarantees” to Ukraine.
He also added on X that although the guarantees were not permanent, they had been set to 15 years with the “possibility of extension.”
Trump agrees to Ukraine security and economic package
In light of Zelenskyy’s recent meeting with Donald Trump, the Ukrainian president took to X to further share insights from the meeting.
He said that the American president had agreed to send “strong security guarantees” to Ukraine. He also added that Trump had confirmed the details through their negotiating teams about the guarantees, adding that they would be put to a vote by the US Congress.
“This is a very strong agreement,” he wrote.
Zelenskyy also revealed that he and Trump had discussed a “package of support” to help Ukraine recover financially and said that Trump had agreed to an “economic package.”
He added that the package includes the entry of American businesses, special conditions for Ukraine’s development and reconstruction, and the development of a “free trade agreement” with America.
“And we are very close to another result in the 20-point plan,” he added.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy claims Russia wants to continue the war
In a series of X posts, Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke of the recent peace talks to help broker peace with Russia. As he explained Ukraine’s next steps, he also noted that he would meet with other international partners.
Zelenskyy added that Ukraine wanted to hold a meeting at the “national security advisors’ level” and noted that America and Europe had already been informed.
He also said that there was “no alternative to peace,” noting that with America’s support, the war could be ended through diplomacy.
“Russia must be pressed into it, otherwise the war will continue,” Zelenskyy wrote.
In another post, the Ukrainian president added that Russia’s attitude toward a referendum was “not positive.” He said that a ceasefire was needed, but Russia did not want that to happen.
“Russia wants to continue pressing us by continuing the war,” he added.
