Abigail Spanberger ushers in new era as Virginia's first female governor
RICHMOND, VIRGINIA: Democrat Abigail Spanberger was sworn in as Virginia’s first female governor on Saturday, January 17, becoming the 75th chief executive of the commonwealth.
Taking the oath at noon outside the state Capitol under a steady drizzle, Spanberger began her term after defeating Republican Winsome Earle-Sears in November.
Her inauguration ushered in a new alignment in Richmond, with Democrats controlling the governor’s office as Republican President Donald Trump continues his second term in Washington.
Spanberger succeeded Republican Glenn Youngkin, returning the executive branch to Democratic leadership.

Spanberger’s rise marked the first time a woman had held Virginia’s highest office. Since the colony’s founding and the commonwealth’s establishment in 1776, every governor had been male.
Standing on the Capitol steps, the former CIA case officer and congresswoman formally ended that streak.
State officials confirmed that she would be addressed as “Madam Governor,” and in formal settings as “Her Excellency,” titles never before applied to a woman in Virginia’s top post.
Wearing white for women’s suffrage
In a break from tradition, Spanberger wore an all-white outfit for the ceremony. Virginia protocol typically called for men in the official party to wear morning coats and women to wear dark suits.
As the first woman to hold the office, Spanberger chose a long white coat, a color associated with the women’s suffrage movement. She paired the look with a small gold pin, departing from the usual palette while maintaining the formality of the event.

Spanberger was joined by two other history-making Democrats. Ghazala F Hashmi was sworn in as the lieutenant governor, becoming the first Muslim woman to hold a statewide office in the United States.
Jay Jones took the oath as attorney general, making him the first Black person elected to that position in Virginia.

Their inaugurations completed a leadership team that reflected a broader shift in the makeup of the commonwealth’s executive branch.
Democrats take control in Richmond
The ceremony confirmed a transfer of power in Richmond. With Spanberger replacing Youngkin, Democrats regained control of the governor’s mansion.
The change sets up a split political landscape, with a Democratic administration in Virginia operating alongside a Republican White House under President Trump, shaping the next chapter of state and federal relations.
