WASHINGTON, DC: Former Republican Representative Adam Kinzinger of Illinois endorsed President Joe Biden's reelection campaign on Wednesday, June 26, just a day before the first presidential debate with former President Donald Trump.

In a video released on June 26, Kinzinger, declaring himself a 'proud conservative', criticized Trump as a menace to American values.

Kinzinger stated, expressing his surprise at endorsing a Democrat for president, “I’ve always put democracy and our Constitution above of all us. It’s because of my unwavering support for democracy that today, as a proud conservative, I’m endorsing Joe Biden for reelection.”

“This is what putting your country before your party looks like,” Biden responded to the video with a post on social platform X. “I’m grateful for your endorsement, Adam.”

Adam Kinzinger, a vocal critic of Trump, has become a prominent national commentator on CNN following his retirement from Congress in 2022.

The Illinois Republican, who served in the US Air Force and flew missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, expressed to CNN that endorsing Biden over Trump was an easy decision for him, The Hill reports.

“I guess I wrestled to the extent of like, okay, you know, endorsing a Democrat as a Republican is a big deal,” Kinzinger said. “But to me, it wasn’t much … I didn’t have to look in the mirror and look into my soul or anything like that.”

He went on to say that the previous president had fostered "a culture of just anger and division" and that he wanted his child to grow up in a nation where "decency in the greatest office in the land" was valued highly.

“Our campaign is proud to earn the support of Congressman Kinzinger, a true public servant who is a model for putting our country and our democracy over party and blind acquiescence to Trump,” Julie Chavez Rodriguez, the campaign manager for Biden, made a statement.

The endorsement serves as a significant lift for the Biden campaign, which seeks to attract moderate Republicans following the withdrawal of former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley from the GOP primary in March.

The campaign has initiated advertisements designed to engage Haley's voters, highlighting Trump's derogatory remarks about her and her supporters, aiming to appeal to disenchanted Republicans.

Internet dubbed Adam Kinzinger as a 'traitor'

As soon as Kinzinger's endorsement video went viral on platform X, users started criticizing him. A user stated, "You are not a conservative. You are an embarrassment."

Another user added, "You are a traitor to America."

The third commentator wrote, "There is no such thing as American Democracy and you are a treasonist traitor."

"@AdamKinzinger is NOT a conservative, he is an establishment neoliberal communist. Pure deception and propaganda," one said.

A person slammed saying, "No one cares! You are a meme! Traitor."
