WASHINGTON, DC: CNN senior political commentator and former Republican congressman Adam Kinzinger appeared on 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert' to offer a scathing critique of the Republican National Convention and its participants.

Kinzinger did not hold back, denouncing the event and declaring that Moscow was “celebrating” alongside the attendees in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Adam Kinzinger says GOP is not the party 'I remember'

Reflecting on his past experiences, Kinzinger shared his disillusionment with the Republican Party, a sentiment he first felt during the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

“I remember showing up to Cleveland and all of a sudden I’m looking around the room I’m in everybody’s got MAGA hats on and I realized at that moment, this is not the Republican Party I remember,” Kinzinger told Colbert. He recalled feeling distinctly out of place and alienated by the sea of Trump supporters, a stark contrast to the party he had once known.

Kinzinger’s commentary extended beyond mere observations of the party’s transformation. He reflected on his own journey and the backlash he faced from the Republican establishment, especially after he served on the congressional committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot.

He felt the hostility from his party intensified as he refused to “pledge allegiance to a man” rather than the principles of the Republican Party.

Adama Kinzinger slams Trump VP choice JD Vance

When Colbert inquired about the current state of the Republican Party, Kinzinger pointedly replied, “Well, it’s the party I recognize of the last seven years.” His critique did not stop there; he directed sharp criticism at the choice of Senator JD Vance (R-PA) as Donald Trump’s running mate, accusing Vance of embodying the negative shift within the party.

Kinzinger lambasted Vance for his past statements on Ukraine, citing Vance’s 2022 comments where he expressed indifference toward the conflict. “They are celebrating that choice both in Milwaukee tonight and in Moscow,” Kinzinger said, suggesting that Vance’s stance on Ukraine aligns with “Russian talking points.”

He continued to criticize Vance by questioning his moral integrity. “He is a guy who was an anti-Trumper, then all of a sudden is the biggest pro-Trumper,” Kinzinger said, condemning Vance for lacking a “moral soul” and for endorsing policies that he believes are harmful. He went on to describe Vance’s selection as Trump’s running mate as “a terrible pick for the president.”
