Losing a partner after marriage is a terrible feeling for an individual. However, what makes it worse is finding that a precious belonging of the departed has gone missing after you have treasured it for years.

A man on Reddit's forum 'Am I the As*****' shared an incident where the wedding ring of his dead wife was secretly taken away by his sister for her daughter's engagement.

Man shocked to see late wife's wedding ring on niece's finger on her engagement

Taking to the platform, he mentioned that his wife Emily died four years ago from cancer and it was the hardest thing he ever went through.

"We were together for 15 years, and she was my everything. When she passed, I kept her wedding ring in a little jewelry box on my dresser. It’s a very sentimental item to me," the Reddit user wrote.

The person said that currently his sister Claire, 41, has a 17-year-old daughter, Maddie, who just got engaged. He added that it was not Maddie's age that was the issue regarding her engagement but rather something else.

The user wrote, "A few weeks ago, I noticed Emily’s ring was gone. I freaked out and searched everywhere, thinking I misplaced it, but deep down, I knew that wasn’t the case. I didn’t want to accuse anyone without proof, but I had a feeling."

The person then revealed that at Maddie’s engagement party, she was wearing Emily’s ring. The user said he confronted Claire in private and asked her why Maddie had it.

"She tried to brush me off, saying Maddie “fell in love with it” when she saw it once, and Claire thought I’d “want it to go to family” since I wasn’t using it anymore," the user added.

The Reddit user mentioned, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I lost it. I told her to get the ring back immediately, or I was calling the cops. Claire flipped out, saying I was being "selfish" and "ruining Maddie’s big moment." I don’t care! That ring was my late wife’s, and it means everything to me."

He added that the whole family was involved and some people were on his side, saying Claire was way out of line, whereas others thought he was overreacting because it was "just a ring" and Maddie’s "a kid who didn’t know better".

He continued, "Maddie’s crying, Claire’s calling me a monster, and my parents are begging me to “just let it go for the sake of peace.” But I can’t. It’s not about the ring being valuable; it’s about what it represents."

He then mentioned that he told Claire he was giving her one week to return the ring, or he would be filing a police report. "Now everyone’s calling me dramatic and threatening to cut me off if I go through with it. I feel like I’m going crazy. So, am I the a****e?" he concluded.

A Reddit user also chimed in, "Nta. That is theft. This isn’t because she is a kid, and if she is adult enough to get married, she is not a kid. This is entitled women in your family that need to return you late wife’s wedding ring. They are disgusting and any family member that says it’s just a ring, I would volunteer their sentimental jewelry so they too can contribute to the newly engaged kids."
