Woman's mother insists she relocates claiming neighbor is 'too attractive'
In the Reddit post titled, "My Mom Demands I Move Out of My Apartment Because My Neighbor is 'Too Attractive'", the OP detailed the bizarre situation that unfolded after her mother met her neighbor, Jake.
The OP began by explaining, “I (25F) moved into a nice apartment a few months ago. It’s a great place: safe neighborhood, decent rent, and I even get along with my neighbors. One of them, let’s call him Jake, is a super chill guy about my age."
"We’ve chatted a few times, and he’s just friendly. That’s it. Nothing romantic or weird," she added.
One day her mother dropped by her apartment. "She took one look at Jake as he was leaving his apartment, and her whole demeanor changed," the OP shared.
The mother started bombarding the OP with a lot of questions: “Do you like him? Are you dating him? Are you sleeping with him??”
The OP laughed and assured her mother that Jake was "just my neighbor". She hoped that this would be the end of the discussion on Jake, but she was wrong.
The next morning, the OP’s mother called her at 7 am and declared that she had to move out of that apartment.
Dumbfounded, the OP asked her mother why she had to get out of the apartment. The mother replied, "Because “Jake is too attractive, and it’s only a matter of time before he seduces you and ruins your life"."
The mother went on a rant about how men like him “only have one thing on their minds” and how the OP was "too naive" to see it.
"I tried to tell her that Jake and I barely even talk, but she wasn’t having it," said the OP.
Despite the OP’s protests, her mother insisted, even threatening to "take care of him" if she didn’t move out.
"I told her she was being ridiculous and hung up. She blew up my phone with messages like, “You’re disrespecting me,” “I’m only trying to protect you,” and “You’ll thank me one day"," the woman wrote.
"And I blocked her number And went no contact because she does ridiculous s**t like this all the time, AITAH?" asked the OP while concluding her post.
Internet supports OP after she goes 'no contact' with her mother
The post ignited a fierce debate among Redditors, with many offering advice and unanimously declaring the OP as "NTA".
One user wrote, “NTA, but maybe give your neighbor a heads-up. I don’t know what your mom is capable of, but if she potentially could do something crazy, maybe give him a chance to prepare with cameras or something.”
Another user added, “NTA, This sounds like very controlling behavior. Is this your first time living away from your mother? Is this really about her trying to force you to live with her again?"
Others suggested taking extra precautions. “NTA. Alert apartmsnt complex bosses about the issue. Even let Jake know just in case security can't stop your insane mother. Warn your mother to stay away from the apartment complex because police will be called and there is no guarantee you will bail her out."
"NTA. What she calls being disrespectful is actually you being an adult. Remind her that you’re a grown a** adult and didn’t ask for her opinion. Also let her know that you find it disrespectful and downright insulting that she thinks you’re too stupid to take care of yourself. You might also want to remind her that threatening people and assaulting them are illegal," a user said.
Another user wrote, "NTA holy god what a barrage of boundary stomping. You made the correct decision, dont give her any information about yourself if you can help it, who knows what manner of crazy shell pull."
