When a couple is in a relationship, it becomes quite obvious that there is always mutual consent in whatever decision they take which could eventually impact their future. However, at times, one person ends up taking the initiative without consulting their partner and it ends up ruining everything for them.

Recently, a man took to Reddit's popular 'Am I the A*****e' (AITA) forum to share that he left his own birthday party after his girlfriend turned it into a proposal for herself without asking him.

Man leaves birthday party as girlfriend turns it into a proposal for herself

The 28-year-old man wrote in a Reddit post titled "AITA for Leaving My Own Birthday Dinner Because My Girlfriend Turned It Into a Proposal for Herself?" that he had his birthday dinner last weekend and his girlfriend, Sarah (27), offered to plan it.

"I was excited because I usually keep things low-key, but she said she wanted to 'make it special'. She booked a nice restaurant and invited close friends and family," the original poster (OP) wrote in the forum.

He added that everything was going great until it was time for dessert. He wrote that the waiter brought out a cake, but instead of his name on it, it read, "Will You Marry Me, Sarah?"

He stated, "I was completely blindsided. Sarah got all teary-eyed, turned to me, and said, 'Well? This is the best surprise ever, right?' Everyone around us started clapping, and her friends were filming."

The OP further said that he just sat there stunned. He added that Sarah took his silence as hesitation and started going on about how she knew he wasn’t "big on grand gestures," but she couldn’t wait anymore, so she "took matters into her own hands."

He continued, "At that moment, I stood up and said, 'This is my birthday. If you wanted a proposal, you should’ve talked to me about it first.' Then I grabbed my stuff and walked out."

He stated that his girlfriend was mortified, and her friends phoned him, calling him an a*****e for embarrassing her and "ruining the night." The OP further added that Sarah even said he humiliated her when she was just trying to do something romantic.

He concluded the post and asked, "Now, my family is split. Some say I should have just gone along with it for the night, while others think she crossed a major boundary. So… AITA for leaving my own birthday dinner because my girlfriend hijacked it for a proposal?"

People side with OP for leaving his birthday party

Several internet users sided with the man who left his own birthday party after his girlfriend shocked him with a proposal for herself without talking to him first.

A fellow user commented on the Reddit post, "That's beyond self-centered--she totally hijacked your moment for herself. Huge red flag. NTA at all."

One person declared, "I guess the gift she gave you was to show you her true colors. NTA, and you might be dodging a bullet there."

Another stated, "NTA. Glad you didn't go along with it. The cake could have said Will you marry me, YOUR NAME with her proposing to you which would have been cringeworthy as best. Instead she decided to make it all about her and put you on the spot. Please see her for who she really is. Not worthy of your time and attention."
