A 20-year-old Reddit user, BlackDynamite_7, recently shared a dilemma in the r/AmItheA*****e subreddit, asking whether he was wrong for taking his friend Alma’s dog to the emergency vet without her permission, resulting in a $1,400 surgery bill.

The situation started when OP agreed to dog-sit for Alma while she was away visiting her parents. However, things went wrong when Alma's dog, Cherry, began vomiting and refusing to eat on day three.

OP took her friend's dog to emergency vet

After failing to reach Alma (who was at a festival), OP panicked and took Cherry to the emergency vet, where she was diagnosed with a blockage that required immediate surgery.

The surgery was successful, and Cherry is now fine, but when Alma returned and was presented with the bill, she was furious.

OP explained the emergency, "She completely blew up, saying she’d never have approved such an expensive option and would’ve waited to see if Cherry improved."

Alma also claimed she couldn’t pay the bill, "She says she’s broke and can’t pay me back."

The reactions from their mutual friends have been mixed. Some have supported OP, arguing that he did what he thought was necessary to save Cherry’s life.

The OP wrote, "Our mutual friends are split some say I saved Cherry’s life and didn't have anything better I could have done, others say I overstepped by not waiting longer coz 'it's not like a dog could die that quick.'"

Now, Alma is ignoring OP and telling their mutual friends that he put her in financial distress.

The Reddit community largely rallied behind OP, with many users agreeing that he acted out of concern for Cherry's well-being and had no other viable option given the urgency of the situation.

A user said, "All vets are expensive, and in an emergency situation they are very expensive. You did the right thing."

Another added, "Nta She'd be crying about how you murdered her dog if you'd taken the ONLY other humane route. You absolutely did the right thing. $1,400 isn't even particularly expensive for that kind of surgery. "

A third commented, "NTA I was going to say this. $1400 at an emergency vet for this sort of surgery is literally a bargain. They likely did you a favour and lowered the rates or something. You actually inadvertently saved your friend probably thousands of dollars. Also, you're a good person. I would have you watch my dog any day."

"You did good! Saved a dog's life. Sorry your friend cares more about $1400 than her pet," wrote one in support of OP.

A person said, "NTA. You did the right thing. She shouldn’t be a pet owner if she can’t pay for emergency vet bills."
